Marriage at breaking point after years of unhappiness, should I try again?

Need some advise.

My Husband and I have been married for 17 years, together 19. Unfortunately not all of those have been happy years, there have been some major issues which started probably when my Son was very young- he is 15 next week.
Things when my Son was very young were like he would say he was working late but be down the pub, spent all weekend 'decorating' his friends house instead of being home with us and this when on for a year but other than that we were mostly doing alright so I persevered.
We have not had the easiest of times over the years, I have struggled a lot with my health and been in and out of hospital and we have had ours and others share of bad luck over the years so we have had very difficult times.
Then over the past 6 years or so things have just gone down hill, now things have got to a point where I cant just keep going as is, I am not happy and deep down neither is he.
He rolls his eyes at me, huffs is I ask him to do something, we haven't had any type of physical relationship for 5 years now. He never really says I am beautiful or calls me sweet names, he walks around the house in what 'seems' like a grump all the time and speaks to me like I am 'less than sometimes and is dictative at times especially when it comes to money- which we never seem to have.
He makes me feel like I am burden a lot of the time and I have tried so many times over the years to communicate how unhappy I have been and what needs to change but he doesn't seem to be able to consistently change, maybe a week or two but then reverts back to normal. I have stayed for years while the kids were younger but was not happy.

I sat him down just over a month ago and explained how series things were and that if things do not change then it will be over between us, the only things that changed were he went veggie at home (I am vegan and his meat eating has always been an issue) and he started holding my hand when we watched T.V.
I realized I was still unhappy so spoke to him again and said I need space for a bit and he left that night to go and stay in a hotel, he is now staying at his Mum's house till further notice.

My Daughter was fine about this because she sees all the conflict and all the tears I have cried when he has spoken to me in a rude way. She is only 10 but she is so insightful and has said that 'Daddy will not change and he makes you sad, you have tried so many times, it wont work out'

My Son although older was very upset that evening cause my Husband wanted to leave straight away so we had to talk to the kids quickly then he just left and so I was hugging my Son whilst he cried for over half an hour but now he seems good, he is even looking at properties online in case we have to move.

He said he still loves me and still wants to try but doesn't know if that's going to be enough anymore.
I honestly do not know if I have it in me to keep trying if I am honest, I feel emotionally burnout. I love him, that will always be the case- he is the Father of my children and we have been together so long but I do not feel 'IN love' with him anymore.
I have been back and forward and then back again with whether I want to give us one last try, my Friends keep saying that he wont be able to change consistently and we will just end up back here or I will be unhappy for the rest of my life.

I am worried that if I do give it another try that it wont work out and we will be back here again and it will just start the pain all over again for all of us.
I do wonder if we would be happier and actually better parents if we were not together and if the kids would actually do better seeing that we are both happier even if that is separately.

The kids and I have been doing fine on our own and actually seem happier, my Mum said that she thought we all seemed a bit 'lighter' the other day.

I really don't know what to do, can anyone offer advise or has anyone been where I am now?

No advice but you have amazing children.
Wishing you all the very best

The fact that your children support you being apart speaks volumes.
The atmosphere in the house must have been awful. Now it’s not. It’s not just about you getting back with him, if he comes home it affects both of your lovely children.
You have done enough now. A quarter of your time together now has been with no intimacy at all - it’s done.
You cannot get that back. He is probably anxious because you are all he knows, too, but that’s not a reason.
It is very sad but it’s time to move on. If you draw a line now, chances are you can co-parent well and be amicable.
If he comes home chances are he will have to leave again and the kids will have to see it again.
Do not feel any sense of guilt. You’ve enough. You have many years to go in life.
Time for a fresh start and for your children to see you relaxed and content.

Heart goes out to you. I think you need some counselling before you make a firm decision. Also, if it's ok for him to stay with his mum for the moment, say that you can't make a decision yet. You could give yourself a mental date of Christmas to have decided what you want to do, as this gives you time to recover
It doesn't sound like a healthy relationship x

Thankyou so much for your replies ladies.
I think I know in my heart that you are right * *
PetulaGordeno Its just so hard to make that final cut.
He has stood by me through the years where he could easily have walked away and I keep asking myself 'doesnt that count for something'?

Stop flogging a dead horse OP.
It will never change.

Your kids sound great. Make a good life for you and them.

Ive just realised that when I said decorating his friends house, it soubded a bit like I meant he was having an affair which he wasnt. He was just hanging with his friend instead of being at home with us.

It's your decision but no sex or intimacy in 5 years and children who are clearly happy to see you both split.. it's pretty clear to me
You've had the come to jesus talk and it hasn't worked
You shouldn't be letting your 10 year old see you cry so much either really, they will be feeling stuck in the middle and it'll impact them.

He doesn't seem to want to put much energy into counselling or changing so..... enjoy a freer life with total control over your own finances
Go for a free 30 minute with a solictor
You need to arm yourself with some info about his pensions and how much you have left on mortgage, debts etc

UpDownAllAround1 · 03/08/2026 02:00

You have tried v hard to fix this. It hasn’t worked. I feel you may need to focus on your own work to establish if you can prepare for a permanent split/divorce

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 03/08/2026 02:05

I cannot find any reason in your opening post why you would stay together.

category12 · 03/08/2026 06:02

I don't actually think it's fair on your kids to try again at this stage.

It sounds like they' have come to terms with the split and potentially putting them through it all again is not right.

There's a danger of leaning on them emotionally/parentifying them so while openness is good, I'd be careful about how much they're taking on.

ConfusedMuma22 · 06/08/2026 01:09

I officially ended things tonight.
It was awful, he cried, I cried. I dont want to hurt him but I also dont want to keep hurting myself by accepting less than I deserve.
I just dont feel that its fair on any if us to keep trying when the end result is likely to be the same because he just cant change.

It’s not very clear what ‘trying’ actually looked like. However, it does sound like you’re done and the ripping off the plaster was the best decision. When a ten year old makes the comments your DD made, suggests that splitting should have happend years ago.

Were you always vegan or was he always a meat eater? The issues surrounding this sounds like a relationship incompatibility made worse because of all the other incompatibilities.

Cherrysoup · 06/08/2026 08:39

He sounds like he’s acted as though he were single, leaving you at home to parent while he’s off socialising with his mates. Put yourself first for a change. Your dc sound amazing.
