If you met your OH online?

After a long time of not being in a relationship, I’m going to get online. I’m 50, good career, home, good family and friends etc and life has been good…but I finally feel ready to get out there. I’ve been warned about the horrors awaiting me but I’m still hanging on to some optimism as I’ve got a few friends who have met decent men this way.

So, question is, if you met your OH online, how long did it take to finally find someone you really clicked with? I’m going to try Match and Hinge so also interested to know which sites are mostly used.

My experience is way out of date now but I met DH on EHarmony in 2012. He was the 2nd person I'd met after messaging / weeding out a few others (one who was unemployed when I had asked for people who had a job, one who took 2 days to reply to fairly simple messages etc...). Married 12 years and I never would have met him in 'real life' although we didn't live a crazy distance from each other.

Good luck OP!

I met my husband on POF. Prior to that, I’d been on POF and Tinder on and off for probably about a year. I’d have to have breaks and come off it, as it depressed/irritated me in equal measures.

There are a lot of frogs. Men who wanted to come to my house to have sex with me after exchanging one message. Men who just wanted a pen pal and would exchange message after message with no intention of wanting to meet up. Men who didn’t read my profile and would be the complete opposite of what I was looking for. Men who only said, “hi” in their messages with nothing else. (I could go on).

I probably went on about four or five dates in that time. Liked a couple of them but they were time wasters.

My husband messaged me and I was just about to come off it again (as was he). It was just after Christmas so we swapped a few messages and arranged to meet early January. We were engaged within the 15 months. Have been together nearly nine years now.

I’m not sure, if I found myself single again, whether I would try online dating again, but it does seem to be the main way to meet people nowadays.

Met my now dh 15 years ago, he was the first online date I met and I was last of a number as he’d been trying a bit longer than me.
I say be very picky about who you’re prepared to talk to too or eventually meet. If you’ve any reservations don’t and move on, and don’t keep messaging for months either they want to meet or don’t ( or can’t!)

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 03/08/2026 17:39

I started joining online dating sites on my 18 birthday and matched with my husband 2 weeks later on OkCupid. We’ve been together for 10 years and have 2 children.

NicPapr25 · 03/08/2026 17:42

Met my husband online 7 years ago. Would say the paying sites are slightly less of a cattle call, but that maybe my age. Think the grammar and spelling on these sites is quite telling. I would also suggest getting an app to do a reverse picture look up as there seems like a lot of fake profiles. Good luck, for me it was worth the effort met a lovely man, to start off with I was very nervous, but after a couple of months and i actually enjoyed going on dates. X

TheBirdintheCave · 03/08/2026 18:08

I was on OkCupid for ten years with no joy. My husband joined and I was the first person he messaged 😆

Sostressed6 · 03/08/2026 18:10

Met my husband on an app in 2014. Very happy, two kids.

A LOT of awful dates before I met him and one fairly rubbish relationship where I was trying to convince myself out of desperation. A few fun dates with really nice guys I wasn’t attracted to.

Banalas · 03/08/2026 18:15

I met my dh online in a chat room connected to a shared interest - this was 20 years ago. Is that sort of thing even possible now?

spinningplatez · 03/08/2026 18:22

Met my husband online after about a year of random dating/kissing frogs. Both divorcees with kids. Knew he was special from the first date. We honestly just clicked. Still deeply in love 20 years on 🥹

spellingtest · 03/08/2026 18:36

This is such a lovely thread. I’ve met a few men online before my current relationship. There were some idiots but lots that were lovely and despite no spark they remain very good friends. I think it’s the modern way of doing it (and I’m nearly 60 although feel permanently 21). Good luck OP. Trust your gut and stick to your boundaries.

marmitegirl01 · 03/08/2026 18:50

I’d recommend Burned Haystack Dating method. It helps you really filter out the chancers. It is so interesting how many red flags are evident when you know what to look for in peoples profiles and in the language they use.

seeingmerciful · 03/08/2026 18:54

Oh wow, some really lovely stories here. I was expecting a lot of bad ones!

I tried online dating about 20 years ago and had three dates - all three were horrors! One of them went on all night about his ex and when it was time to say goodbye, attempted to kiss me before bursting into tears saying how much he still missed his ex girlfriend. 🙄

The other two - one was an utter pervert and the other was a coke user so nope!

My plan of action now is to keep interactions short but for safety’s sake (so many scammers about) ask for a video call first. I think I’d feel happiest going on a real life date if I at least knew the person was real.

These are great stories though and give me hope.

Male (late 50s) perspective here, in case it’s useful.

I went on just one site (Hinge), put some effort into my profile by using varied and recent photos with thoughtful quotes, and had quite a few first dates, then one second date … and then a third, and a fourth, etc (all with the same woman) … I count myself lucky because the one woman to whom I felt strongly attracted, fancied me back! It’s still a very new relationship, but with lots of green flags, and we spend a lot of time together without getting sick of each other … hopefully it will last, but even if it doesn’t, I would say that my low expectations of dating sites have already been exceeded.

Having swiped through quite a few women’s profiles between late 40s and late 50s, I do also have a few suggestions for your profile that might help you to get better quality matches, in case you have the patience to read a wordy post. My only agenda here is if I can help one woman get a few better dates and avoid some crappy experiences with badly behaved men, then my time writing this will have been well spent.

-start with one site. You will probably get enough matches to keep you busy, especially if you put a decent effort into your profile.
-use recent photos that look like you, are taken in good lighting, and in which you look happy.
-include at least one photo that shows your body shape (so basically not just your head, and not wearing a bulky winter coat), but don’t feel any requirement to show lots of flesh or even be dressing “sexy.” Any sort of normal summer clothing would show enough, I should think. Gym / bikini pics / form fitting evening gown with plunging neckline = nice, sure, but not necessary unless that is your personal style.
-include photos and quotes that show your interests and lifestyle in a range of settings, so that men who are compatible and want to share more than a bed with you can picture themselves doing that. One of the key photos that caught my eye with my new flame involved hiking boots and shorts because I’m rather outdoorsy.
-you don’t need to lie about your age. I hesitated before putting my true age, and met someone else who did exactly the same. Trust is important to both of us, and that helped us get off to a good start.
-unless you have a reason to want to avoid meeting people who live close to you, start with a tight geographic filter. Travelling far to meet a semi-random new person is a real slog. Conversely, ending up with someone who lives fairly close by makes it a lot easier to develop a new relationship. You can always expand that filter later if you don’t like the matches you’re getting.
-for a first “date”, choose some sort of activity you will both enjoy whether or not there is chemistry. That way you will not have wasted your time even if it is not “your person,” and it will be less of a slog to meet multiple people.

Thinking about some of the profiles I said “no thanks” to right away … five headshots in random different settings don’t tell a guy anything about you. Also don’t be wearing sunglasses in every photo. Eyes and expression are really important. And include mostly quotes that convey who you are, rather than what you want from a guy. Let them show what they wish to offer you.

I have been pleasantly surprised, after having heard so many negative stories about these sites, because all but one of the women I met in person looked like their photos, and all of them seemed like lovely human beings, even if only one of them felt “right” for something more. But maybe the average “quality” of the guys on these sites is lower. I just don’t know because I don’t date guys.

Oh and all the suggestions you and others have made about safety make total sense (message on the site initially, do a call or even video call before meeting in person, make initial meetings in a public place with lots of different exits, delay any sort of home date until you feel 100% happy with that, etc). I should hope that any decent guy with a modicum of awareness will understand why, and will at least go along with any and all of these safety measures, and perhaps even suggest some of them himself!

I hope this is a little bit useful and wish you best of luck and hopefully a bit of fun as well!

I met my now husband online. Set out my non-negotiables and stuck to them e.g. I didn't want to meet anybody with children as I already had two and didn't want/couldn't afford a blended family. Together now almost a decade ❤️

Summerunlover · 03/08/2026 20:30

It took me 18 months. We have been together 8 years now. Married with a 2 year old.

PaperMachePanda · 03/08/2026 20:36

I met my husband online through a shared hobby. We chatted for about 9 months, met, married after a few years and we’re are still together today. 17 years later.

seeingmerciful · 03/08/2026 20:43

Thank you @YankeeDad- that is very helpful. Heading off to a sunny location soon and family are on a mission to capture lots of nice useable photos of me. They’ve been nagging me for a long time to ‘get out there’ so their mission is to capture me at my best.

Thanks for the thoughts.

Met my husband 22 years ago online.
We both met some unsuitable people so be wary.
