THE MOUSSAKA INCIDENT

PetulaClarkMementoMori · 08/07/2026 08:57

Gosh, I never expected so many replies, thank you all. And I hadn't anticipated the level of interest in the Moussaka incident ( I realise I've made it sound like a bad attempt at a title for a Richard Osman book...)
I'm sure it won't live up to expectations, but I'm happy to share. It was quite a few years ago, but the story is this;

Bob and I had been in the village where we live for about a year and a half and it was nice having the peace and quiet, but sometimes I struggled to find cultural or interesting things that were close by. Anyway, I found out a group were planning a Greek evening somewhere close by. So I signed us up. I told Bob about this, but of course, he did his usual trick of lending me half a deaf ear, but somewhere something got lost in translation because he misheard or mistook Moussaka for Bouzouki. He's very into music ( Me not so much) so I think he just heard what he wanted to.
Anyway, he texted his friend Eddie and said something along the lines of 'I'm looking forward to seeing them play the Moussaka tonight.'

Now, Eddie, realised what had happened (He was going along with his wife) and, as he's a bit of a wind-up merchant, sent him a message back saying something like; 'Yes, I hear they're some of the finest Moussaka players in England. Then added; But I'm glad the buffet is all English.'

Now, Bob has never had an expansive palate when it comes to food, and that's fine. But now he thinks he's getting Greek Music and English food.

So, we arrive at the venue and, when the man took our names, we were ushered to some seats at the front. The young man seemed very happy to see us, but I just assumed they were glad people had turned up.

Suddenly Eddie plonked himself down and, with a grin as broad as it was stupid nudged Bob and said; 'I hope you're hungry lad.'

Bob was non-plussed, but then he started to look around and noticed that there was a table with food so, he got up to have a look. I was getting a little bit uneasy with Eddie's joviality, then Bob came back and hissed 'It's all flippin Greek!'

I asked what he meant and he pointed to Eddie and said, he told me the music was Greek, but the food was English. I said 'What music?' I don't know if I can describe the look on his face but it was like watching a Space Hopper wilt.

'I've forgone my bloody egg and chips for this!' Bob said.

'Don't worry, lad, you won't go hungry, I've signed you up.' said Eddie.

At this point I just wanted to go home.

'Signed me up for what?'

'You're judging the best Moussaka.' Eddie said, and honestly I felt like a stroke would be a welcome relief.

And sure enough, five people had made Moussaka's and suddenly Bob was called up. Honestly, it was like a bad dream. I wanted to get up, but I just felt glued to my chair. The people all seemed so lovely and welcoming, and now this, it was like some horrible travesty, like if Lassie had been asked to judge the Great British Bake Off.

Eddie the Idiot (As he's now known) grabbed Bob's elbow and ushered him up. I just curled up inside and hoped to god he wouldn't say or do something stupid. They put a fork in his hand and he stood there like Worzel Gummidge having an aneurysm.

Watching him take that first mouthful was like seeing an advert for children who have no clean water in their village. Honestly, my heart broke. But to his eternal credit, he ate, nodded, moved on...five times. All the while spluttering out words like 'Interesting'....'dense' and.....'flavoursome'. At one point he went blank for a minute, then came back with 'piping hot'.

In the end, he picked one, I can't remember which, and the woman who had made it looked pleased. And that was that. It was utterly awful, and Moussaka has become a dirty word in the house.

Anyway that's the story.

Sorry, if it wasn't quite what you were expecting.

I’m just bemused at the idea that writing LinkedIn profiles for other people is actually considered to be a job.

I'd like to see them since you are offering - and we can all judge.

Do they all use "wanna"?

Why be so unpleasant? It was all harmless entertainment.

Oh this was for @LapisBlue

We seem to be still waiting for a sample of her well-written offerings. Post the link @LapisBlue .

Wetblanket78 · 08/07/2026 13:08

What’s wrong with a moussaka? I love moussaka tastes better eaten the next day though.

Oh just one will do! After all, you were quickly able to judge the OP...

Quamarina · 08/07/2026 13:11

I enjoy your writing. I don’t know why but it reminds me of what I imagined a gentler time to be. When I was growing up (quite grim) I used to escape into books a lot and I used to seek out stories written this way, where people were jolly and lived in the countryside and had simple adventures like this (while solving crimes on the side of course, like a more grown up Enid blyton I suppose) it was a welcome distraction from alkys and crackheads and violence that was my real life. If you were in one of those books you would be the no nonsense local beloved GP who everyone wondered how she could be married to such a grumpy blustering pipe and slippers man, but he would turn out to be good in the end.

Yes I’m fully aware but what you’re suggesting is only those that find the story ‘funny’ are allowed to comment. That’s censorship surely.

It spoils it for others though doesn’t it, if everyone is laughing along at a film and you don’t find it funny you just stay quiet. You wouldn’t stand up and announce it wasn’t funny because it ruins the mood. It seems equally as odd to announce something isn’t funny on a forum, unless it is something offensive and the OP needs teaching.

Izzyink · 08/07/2026 13:15

NuffSaidSam · 08/07/2026 13:02

No, I don't know you at all. I'm referring only to comments you've made and questions you've asked on this thread. If the unkind comments you've made here are not representative of who you are as a person then I'd reflect as to why that is. Maybe the anonymous nature of the internet makes us all a little less kind? Worth reflecting on.

Are you always so patronising?

I think it's more because people are laughing along at something they suppose to be real – and it is very unlikely that either of OP's posts are real. A lot of people are also praising the very obviously AI writing, and it's slightly worrying that people can't recognise it. That's why some posters are calling it out.

No, I don't think so. Only when it's necessary.

Blimey! There’s quite a queue for this year’s Booker prize judging panel 😂

@PetulaClarkMementoMori I enjoyed your tale. Thank you for the giggle. 🤭

NuffSaidSam · 08/07/2026 12:57

That's irrelevant really. Your question was why were your words hurtful/unkind. You can find that out by asking anyone, whatever their anecdote, whether it's 'a cry for help or they're trying to be funny'. I imagine the response will be the same regardless of the topic of the anecdote.

No my question was never that.

I actually think that the OP is really unkind to her OH/DP. In both stories she has posted (her only two posts under that user name) she makes him out to be a fool or an idiot, who is vaguely "Little England" with him referring in the other thread to certain types of food as "foreign muck". Maybe it is just to entertain people, or maybe it isn't. I have no idea and neither do you. I have at least asked the question of the OP.

Ok fair enough.I’m no good at recognising AI but agree that the post is hard to believe. I like reading fiction though and it didn’t really matter to me if it really happened or not.
I have noticed before on MN people telling people bluntly that they aren’t funny whether it was AI or not and it needs calling out as it isn’t normal behaviour.

FeliciaFancybottom · 08/07/2026 13:22

I'm actually quite heartened that no one has claimed to be howling, snorting tea/coffee/coke/organic cold-pressed kombucha down their nose, waking their snoring husband/sleeping baby.
We demand a higher level of amusing anecdote.

I think if you'd said that, it would have been a completely valid question. But that wasn't what you asked, or at least not how you phrased it.

If you’re trying a career in creative writing maybe don’t give up the day job.

No maybe about it.

I would be keeping any emails pared back to basics too.

Some people can sing, others can’t, some people can write , others can’t.

Well I said exactly that in my first post to the OP:

"Having also read your left handed incident thread, I can't work out if you despise your DH, who in both threads you seem to have contempt for. I'm presuming that Bob is also the DH in the other thread. Are you looking for relationship advice? Or if you are trying out your fictional story telling skills?"

I think most of the people laughing along are aware that there has been some creative license used in the retelling of this story. I wouldn't worry about that. I think that's very often the case with anecdotes of this kind.

I agree that one was fine, which is why I didn't respond to/comment on that one. The one I responded to was the 'cry for help or trying to be funny' post, which you also wrote, right?

GarlicEverywhere · 08/07/2026 13:30

I loved your left-hand OP, @PetulaClarkMementoMori, and have thoroughly enjoyed this one! Thank you!

The world's increasingly full of people who're unable to believe humans can write coherent prose, let alone wittily coherent prose. Don't know which AIs they think wrote all the classics! Their loss; more fool them.

Do you mean this post in response to another poster?

"I suppose what I can't work out is if it is a cry for help because "Bob" or her husband (on the other thread) is so hopeless or if it is a work of fiction for entertainment. Things like Penis Beaker make it into all time classics because they come across as so genuine and plausible.

Do you think that this is a real story and the OP is looking for sympathy or support? Or is it something else?"

I think so! Although there have been so many at this point I couldn't swear to it!

Edited

I've not asked for clarity at all! I've simply said that I think your wondering about whether the OP's anecdote was 'a cry for help' might have been better kept internal, that's all.

But didn't we agree to disagree about half an hour ago?! Why are we still going over the same ground?!

I think what you said regarding 'a cry for help' was something that it's fine to think, but rude to ask, essentially. You disagree and I understand that. I think you should try saying it to someone in real life and seeing in real time how that makes them feel.

I have noticed before on MN people telling people bluntly that they aren’t funny whether it was AI or not and it needs calling out as it isn’t normal behaviour.

I agree that isn't normal behaviour.

There ARE times when people come looking for opinions. Those times are clearly signposted. They often ask for honest opinions.

Baby name threads are a prime example: people want honesty as they know they won't get it from friends, and there really is no utility on posting baby names besides getting honest feedback. They often say "what does this name make you think of?" or similar.

But other threads involve the OP posting for reasons other than brutal honesty, or they may ask for honesty but within certain parameters.

For instance, there is a thread currently where she posted a dress worn by a model, and asked if that STYLE was suitable for a certain function when worn with specific accessories, which she also indicated.

Eventually the thread became "You are too fat for that, cover up" and, when she pointed out she hadn't actually asked to have her shape commented on, just the clothing item choices, pp tried to defend their comments by saying if you ask for honesty, you get honesty. She hadn't asked about her body type. She felt comfortable revealing what the dress revealed. But people offer unsolicited opinion then defend it on the basis the OP "asked," when often they didn't.

The OP didn't ask what people thought of her style. Even if there are people wondering if the post was AI, (not that she asked) there are ways and ways of asking if she used it, without saying things along the lines of "I'm a great writer so I can tell you that you really aren't." That is just playground meanness and ought to be beneath adult posters.
