Correcting me

My husband keeps correcting me and lines telling me what to do. My sister noticed and asked if I thought it was control or just wanting to help me. I said the latter as he has never been the controlling type. If I pick him up on it he gets angry and defensive so just let it go. It’s really getting me down. I’m actually wondering if it is early dementia. We are in our 69’s

He clearly imagines that he knows everything and you know nothing, and he thinks you are so stupid he has to correct you all the time. I could not tolerate that, and it is obviously well over the top because your sister has noticed.

If he's always been like it, then he's an obnoxious big-headed smartarse who likes to make sure that you know he's cleverer than you. He's not wanting to help you, he's putting you in your place.

If this behaviour has only recently manifested itself, it could be one of the first signs of something not being quite right.

Yes I think there is something wrong but he will NOT see a doctor!

Has he always done this or is this new behaviour? New behaviour might suggest there's something wrong, but it could also be the result of changing lifestyle? eg retirement etc.

Can you give some examples ebcause I think it depends on what sort of things we're taling about. Is deep seated misogyny coming out? Controlling tendencies? Or is it fussiness and nerves? etc etc.

Perhaps go and see your own GP and tell them your concerns. Ask them what's the best thing to do.

Maybe an example may help
here

Does he try and correct other people similarly or if this treatment solely reserved for you?. To me anyway this does not sound anything like dementia but more like control which is abusive behaviour.

It’s not misogynistic, it’s more taking over or doing things for me or reminding me what to do. It’s odd, it’s as if he thinks I’ll forget or can’t manage things without his help. He’s always been a thoughtful person but I find it claustrophobic and stifling.

He thinks you are incompetent, and when you tell him to stop he gets angry with you.

How does that make you feel?

Keroppi · 04/07/2026 11:31

What does he do when you get angry and trll him to stop because you know already?
Sulk?

Something tells me that you need to sit him down and give him the bollocking of a lifetime read him the riot act, and tell him he needs to stop doing it or else.
