i am doing race for life in a few weeks in st albans. I am very fortunate in that noone very close to me has died from a cancer related illness.I have never had to watch someone fight for life or experienced the toll it takes on family and friends first hand, however i have seen it in my friends and am aware of the pain it causes and the strength it takes to beat. What i was thinking of doing is saying that if any of you have someone you would like remembered please leave a message and i will pin it to my shirt so that they are thought of and included on what i know from experience is a touching and moving day . i am fortunate in that i have my health and family but one day if it touches my life i would like to know that someone thought of me and i was still missed. I really hope that doesnt seem like an odd thing to do - it came up as a friend asked if i would pin a message to my shirt for her mum and i wondered if anyone else would like the same. obviously if you think i am insane dont send a message but if there is anyone let me know and i am happy to do it!!!!

Kimi · 23/06/2008 20:08

How lovely, I was going to run this year but I had to have an op (goodbye gall bladder) so I could not get a place.

Anorak a lovely mumsnetter has battled and is winninf breast cancer, and my lovely sister is doing well after cervical cancer.

HappyWoman · 23/06/2008 20:17

Well done you - i am never sure who to put on my shirt - i have seen family suffer but no one really close.
There are lots who just run for those who are carers or anyone who is suffering.
It is a touching day i hope you enjoy it and raise lots of money too.
Which reminds me i must send mine in.

prettyfly1 · 23/06/2008 20:38

Would it be possible for you to mention Karen, my friend who died of breast cancer last year at the age of 38. She left 3 young dd's behind.

Also, someone at work going through it just now. Don't want to mention her name but for anyone still battling this disease would be good.

Flamesparrow · 23/06/2008 20:43

Please could you add "Sue" for me - it covers 3 women who have touched my family's life and were taken too soon

Sanguine · 23/06/2008 20:52

Oh you complete star. I did it a couple of times - once with a broken foot, once strapped and braced to the nines, but my rubbish body isn't really up to it, especially since SPD caused my pelvis to destabilise even more. But at Christmas, my lovely, lovely aunt lost her fight against breast cancer, and before that, my absolute hero, my much loved Granny died of ovarian cancer.

So, please could you write Emma's auntie Beryl and Granny Kathleen on your card?

Run well, and thank you.

prettyfly1 · 23/06/2008 20:53

you are more then welcome. i will wear their names with pride!!!

Prettyfly - what a lovely gesture! I did the Race for Life in Guildford a few weeks ago - it's such an emotional event. Good luck!

OrmIrian · 24/06/2008 13:54

Good for you prettyfly!

Romy7 · 24/06/2008 13:59

Marlene - my 'other mum' - died of bowel cancer two years ago. i wore her name on my shirt last year - enjoy your run!
thank you!

sagacious · 24/06/2008 14:01

George (age 6) In remission from non hodgkins (diagnosed age 3)

(always makes me well up)

Its a fab day (I did it last year)

Alexa808 · 24/06/2008 14:11

prettyfly what a kind gesture. Really got tears in my eyes reading the messages.

Could you please add my DHs late Mum to your shirt? Her name is Carletta, she died very young and left her 3 boys behind. DH has never gotten over her death, she suffered so much. Through all the treatment they tried to find the primary but couldn't locate it. She was so brave.

Thank you! I wish you good luck and a safe run.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 24/06/2008 14:25

Hi prettyfly,

This is a very kind gesture on your part.

Would you mind adding the following names to your shirt for me please:-

Christina
Ted
Paul

You have both my undying thanks and gratitude.

Run with pride!!.

Attila

prettyfly1 · 24/06/2008 21:02

no gratitude required, its an honour to do it really and my eyes have welled a few times already at your stories.

thankyou

how lovely prettyfly and a lovely gesture.

Could you please add the name of my darling uncle who we lost last year to cancer - he was very poorly and we saw a big strong man reduced to such a frail, struggling man in so much pain. Now all we have left is our pain, but I will deal with that if it means he is free of his. He was like a father to me and I miss him dreadfully.

His name is Bernard Ward.

Also, could you add OJ's Steve and Mr MB to your top, assuming MB and OJ are ok with it - they have both lost their DH's very recently to cancer.

Thank you so much for this thread - I am so grateful to you doing this.

Romy7 · 25/06/2008 17:29

do you have a 'justgiving' page?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 25/06/2008 17:34

A lovely idea.

"If I don't see you through the week, I'll see you through the window"

My Grandad died last month of Bowel cancer, and this is the phrase I'll always remember him by.

prettyfly1 · 25/06/2008 20:23

i do but i am not looking for sponsorship - please donate directly to breast cancer or cancer research if you want to support the day! i am obviously raising money but thats not why i came on here!

so touched by reading your messages and once again reminded of how fortunate i am and grateful for all the lovely blessings in my life. I cant pretend to understand how painful it must be but if i can honour the fight shown by other people i am grateful for the chance to do so.

Could you add Lucy, she died over 3 years ago now, leaving four dc with her wonderful husband. She was an inspiration to me and showed me the type of mum I wanted to be.

slug · 26/06/2008 16:23

Could you add Joy, my friend who had possibly the shittiest life ever, married off at 16 and again at 18 to a man who tried to kill her and who now is in the terminal stages of breast cancer leaving 4 children.
