I am 3 years into a PhD and in the process of writing it up. Financially we are really struggling and need me to get a job. I have applied for a couple of jobs and not got them. The PhD will probably take another 4 months to complete. Would you finish it off so that you could get a better paid job but seriously piss of your dp or give up and get a lower paid job doing anything just to bring some money in but give up your dream job?

Could you compromise and get a part-time job to it around your phd?

scorpio1 · 21/06/2008 20:19

I would finish the PhD, deffo. Can you get an evening job or something?

janeite · 21/06/2008 20:19

I would finish the PHD but also work part time. Or even work full time and still finsih the PHD.

Jazzicatz · 21/06/2008 20:20

I suppose that will have to be the compromise - getting a part-time job in the evening.

i am just finishing my degree and am working full time. its incredibly hard and i have had to sacrifice pretty much any semblance of a life but it can be done. dont give up - you have come too far.

fryalot · 21/06/2008 20:22

if you can work part-time as well as finish your phd, then that's the way to go.

but you must finish it. YOu will always regret not doing so.

Jazzicatz · 21/06/2008 20:23

Just don't know if I have the energy to go out to work as well as writing up and looking after the boys. But you are all right!

Absolutely you have to finish it, otherwise you've wasted the last three years.

In the grand scheme of things four more months of struggling financially will be worth it to get a better job afterwards.

Go part time if you have to, but you have to finish your PhD.

janeite · 21/06/2008 20:29

How old are the children? Lots of people mange to combine full time work with study but I suppose it's easier once the children are a bit older.

janeite · 21/06/2008 20:30

Manage

Jazzicatz · 21/06/2008 20:30

5 and 3 so they still require quite a bit of care and the 3 yr old only does 3 days at nursery and is home with me the other 2.

cupsoftea · 21/06/2008 20:33

could you work like crazy to get it done quicker or get a part time job & finish later?

Jazzicatz · 21/06/2008 20:38

Yes you are all right - I need to get a job locally and try and get the PhD completed quickly. Thanks all x

4 months is nothing. HANG in there and concentrate on your phd. It would be madness to jeopardise it now.

Can you take in a language student or something? That could be a few hundred a month? If you have a spare room of course.

Jazzicatz · 21/06/2008 20:41

Thats worth thinking about also greeny - thanks

My mum used to take in Spanish students when I was a teenager. I never minded too much. They were always out.

Jazzicatz · 21/06/2008 20:46

How do you go about doing that though greeny?

OP posts:
greenelizabeth · 21/06/2008 20:53

Hmm, well do you live near an English language school? If you are London you probably can't throw a stone without hitting one. Yellow pages and language schools?

Go for a BOY. They are easier. Girls don't eat this, don't eat that. The sheets aren't soft enough the water isn't hot enough....

Is your dp threatened by your PhD? Sounds wierd to try to persuade you to give up so near to the end when you could soon get better money anyway. Good luck with fitting it all in.
