Some men do leave and there’s no one else. I know quite a few who have .

no idea if that’s the case here or not but it absolutely does happen

Agree and in this situation he wants to stay in the house for now do he doesn't have anyone to go to it seems. Sometimes people just suddenly think life's too short to be unhappy or have a midlife crisis. To announce it out of the blue like this and at such a crucial time in the OP"s childs life is selfish and thoughtless though. A shock for OP bit he'll have been thinking about this for a while. So typical on here.

Also agree that men do leave with no other person to go to. In my personal experience it’s rarer than men who have someone else, sadly.
His wanting to stay in the house, however, shows he’s got nowhere else to go at present, not that he’s got nobody to go to.
The timing is so crap that I’m more suspicious that he’s been issued an ultimatum somewhere, possibly an attached OW who is going to split with her partner but is still in their shared home, so nobody can go anywhere yet. It’s obviously pure speculation but the timing of the announcement couldn’t be worse so I feel that something external has caused it.
It’s not like OP saw it coming or thought it was that dire that he couldn’t stand it any more, so why on earth suddenly announce something as devastating to your family as this, with just two months to go before exam season starts?
I don’t know what the catalyst is, but I feel that something or someone must have prompted the timing.
