I am ill. Got a visitor until tomorrow

What do I do? I have ‘flu symptoms. Really feeling horrendous. The thought of getting out of bed makes me shiver even more.

The visitor can’t go home. They flew here from 700 kms away. He’s flies back tomorrow. He’s a relative. Very passive. Not one to take any sort of initiative and take himself off to visit the area alone. He will sit and sit and do nothing if I don’t suggest, lead etc. I find this tiring even when I am well!

Please. Tips on how to get through this.

Tell him you’re too unwell to get up and interact today. Get all the things you need and stay in your room except to get anything else you need. If he sits and does nothing that’s his problem.

PersephoneParlormaid · 27/12/2025 07:18

Yeah, just look after yourself and leave him to it.

helluvatime · 27/12/2025 07:18

Ask him to look after you. Or just let him sit. He's an adult. He'll understand.

OriginalSkangCantGetInAccount · 27/12/2025 07:19

Can't you just tell him you're unwell and suggest he goes out exploring?

gamerchick · 27/12/2025 07:20

He needs to go home before he gets ill himself and he's stuck with you.

Maybe a premier inn.

billiongulls · 27/12/2025 07:30

Tell him you are sick and go to bed. Ignore him.

sallymonella · 27/12/2025 07:33

Tell him that you've got the flu, you're worried about giving it to him, and so you're going to bed for the day.

What he does then is his choice.

SwaningAroundHereandThere · 27/12/2025 07:43

Last thing he wants is flu.

Hide away, let him find his own way of coping for a day and he might even return home early.

700kl is about 400 miles- are you both in the UK?

Seaoftroubles · 27/12/2025 07:48

He's an adult. It's not your job to look after him if you are ill. Give him details of a couple of a few places to visit nearby then it's up to him what he does with his day. Go back to bed with a hot drink and rest. If you need any meds ask him to go to the pharmacy for you.

HipHopDontYouStop · 27/12/2025 07:49

he lives in UK. I don’t. His flight is booked for tommorrow.

He simply will not take himself off anywhere. And I will feel terribly guilty. But nothing to be done.

The problem is his.

Stay in your room and leave him to it.
He sounds a bit useless if he can't fill a day exploring where you live.
As a grown man he needs to get his arse into gear.

Get well soon.

pizzaHeart · 27/12/2025 08:07

As PPs suggested take paracetamol or whatever you usually take, water, tissues and go to your room. Explain to your visitor that you are unwell and don’t want to pass it to him. Negotiate times when he is using the kitchen.
Communicate by txts/ whats app messages.

sallymonella · 27/12/2025 08:08

While you're lying in bed maybe have a think about why you're feeling "terribly guilty", because you really don't need to be.

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 27/12/2025 08:10

I’m assuming you are in mainland Europe, if he can’t take himself out for coffee/lunch and a bit of sightseeing then that’s on him. You are unwell and need to rest.

I assume it’s part of a longer trip, so he can’t cancel?
I’d explain now that you have bad flu and that you will need to stay away from him. That includes picking up, showing him round etc.
He’ll have a phone to assume himself at the very least. Does it matter if he does nothing?

HipHopDontYouStop · 27/12/2025 08:18

He is useless with zero curiosity.

He is useless with zero curiosity.

Then sitting watching the tv won’t be an issue for him.

Order in food if you can, give him the remote control and stay in bed.

It’s a shame but can’t be helped.

StopGo · 27/12/2025 08:32

How is he getting to the airport tomorrow? If you do have flu you won’t be fit to drive tomorrow. This is his problem to solve, he can rebook his flight to today and get a taxi.
If you have flu you will be incapable of getting up and it would be selfish to spread it.

Hercisback1 · 27/12/2025 08:32

Let him sit and watch TV then.

It's you that's trying to impose your idea of fun on him.

BunchOfShapes · 27/12/2025 08:35

Leave him to it. He's maybe just someone who likes sitting in. You don't need to join him. Get him to bring you things you need as well.

Hope you feel better soon!

UxmalFan · 27/12/2025 08:41

This is bad luck on both of you. Nobody's fault. Tell him to help himself to food and the tv and take a key if he goes out. You could ask him to bring you a hot drink when he makes one so he feels useful.

Endofyear · 27/12/2025 08:51

No need at all for you to feel guilty - you can't help being ill! Stay in bed and message him that you have the flu and can't get out of bed. He's a grown man and can look after himself for a day!
