Who gets the spot on the drive?

So we currently have a drive with only space for one car as the other half is a front garden type thing. There is plenty of off road parking available right outside our house.

My husband has a beloved Aldi Rs3 which he insists should park on the drive (he only drives it a few times a month) so it would just be sat there taking up the space half the time. He also has a work van which he usually parks on the road outside our house. I have my own car and a 5 year old, I do the shopping, walking the dogs etc which I use the car for a lot, my child is home educated and has SEN needs so is with me 24/7, we go out in the car daily.

So who gets the parking space on the drive
Aldi Rs3
Work can
My car (Volvo xc60) so quite big for parking on the road too

This is actually quite lighthearted, no actual arguments about it! I'm just curious.

@SarahAndQuack I really don't mind him having the car, it is his hobby and I know how much he enjoys it. We can comfortably afford the car so that's not an issue 😊

I just find it slightly annoying having to lug a child with needs, dogs and lots of shopping up the driveway (trying to not scratch his car in the process)

I think extending the driveway would be the best option!

I'd go you, easier to be closer to the door dealing with child/shopping etc.

The valuable car is probably safest on the drive. Plus how else is he going to let passers by know which house it belongs to? Wink

Any garages to rent nearby? If he was my ndn I'd be throwing bird seed on the bonnet!!

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 18/12/2025 10:47

The dog, child car, for safety reasons.

Oooh, a new addition to the middle aisle at Aldi! Which Aldi did you get it at, I need a cheap, new car. (Sorry, nothing constructive to add to discussion).

Sell the Audi, it sounds like a very expensive decoration!

If he won’t do this though, I’d say Audi on the drive and your car parked across the drive, so that the side your SEN child gets in on is pavement facing, so they don’t go near the road.

bananaramaaaa · 18/12/2025 11:12

I don't think he would want to rent a garage for it as he wouldn't want it far away from him 😅

The audi, though he should park his work van further way so you can park as close to the drive as possible (assuming your drive is in front of your front door).

The car in day to day use as a family car. I think when you live in a situation where you don’t have sufficient storage for a classic car, you really shouldn’t have one clogging up everyone’s parking for their daily cars. We each have a daily use car, and then Dh has a vintage vehicle and two motorbikes. 🙄 We have a private drive and outbuilding that can store everything securely. If not, it would have to go.

@angelos02 Yes it is one of those boy racer noisy cars! It has been modified aswell 😅

Park it on the road in the hope that it will be stolen.

I'm going different to everyone else and say I'd put the work van on the drive, out of the way, as sometimes neighbours can be funny about vans on the road, especially if they are big.
Practically it probably makes the most sense to have your car on the drive though so the best option is to convert the garden space at the front into another parking space.

Vaxtable · 18/12/2025 14:11

Your car as you are carting the child about. He can pay for storage for his Audi if he is that concerned

BlueandWhitePorcelain · 18/12/2025 14:19

IMO, the safety of any small child comes before a car. All it takes, is to take your eyes off the child for 10 seconds and they can wander into the road, if they are standing by the car, on a road. Much safer to have them standing on the driveway, outside the car.

(Speaking as the parent of a disabled adult, who can be oblivious to the dangers of cars in a car park, who has disappeared out of my sight, in the time it took to open the boot, put something in it and close it - a matter of seconds).

A large garage.. Room for a campbed....
