Where to get married?

My DP proposed 3 years ago and is waiting for me to decided to get married. I love him, he’s amazing and everything I could ask for. We have been together for 8 years. It is second time around for us both. We are in our fourties’ and have 4 teens between us.

Next summer would be a good time but I just don’t know what to do. He wants a big thing to show the world but if I’m honest, I can’t be bothered to arrange it. He works long stressful days so would be up to me to arrange it. We do have busy lives with teens that take a lot of my energy so where would everyone recommend to do this? I’m not a showy person and just want simple casual thing

Sounds to me like you don’t want to do this at all. Have honest chat with yourself then him.

Does he want the big showy wedding to spite his ex wife?

Havenotdecidedyet · 09/12/2025 22:52

@TMMC1 I really do want to do it. He is the man I want to spend the rest of my life with. I just don’t know how to arrange the whole thing now or where to start. I am thinking maybe just us two go away but he says he wants to have family and friends around.

@PInkyStarfish no it wouldn’t be to spite his exw. There’s no hard feelings there and we all co parent well together. If it’s a big thing, I Will probably invite her an her husband as we all get on, I doubt she will come though.

Im just looking for low maintenance ideas where we can have family and friends with little fuss that I don’t spend months worrying about and thousands of pounds when we already have a life together. The marriage won’t change anything as we own our home together and are not having any more children as happy the way it is.

Go somewhere nice abroad and get married. You two and enjoy it.

IF you actually do want to marry, I'd go middle of the road. Registry office if neither of you are religious/wanting a church or religious ceremony. Then maybe hire the back room of a pub/restaurant or hire out an entire, smaller restaurant. Lunch would likely be cheaper and an evening and mid week- even less.

Registry office to get the paperwork. Book a pub that’s big enough for the guests you want to invite and they will do the rest! It doesn’t have to be a big deal to organise. Tell them the guests’ dietary requirements, give them a budget. They will sort it out.
