I have a 3 year old and currently 7 months pregnant. I work for the NHS so don’t get paid enough to live independently, but equally not entitled to benefits.
My relationship has completly broken down and I am miserable and feel the household is becoming toxic and not an ideal environment for a toddler or my unborn baby.
Not married but we own our house and I feel so trapped and don’t know what to do and didn’t find citizens advice any help :(

I have absolutely no qualms about parenting singly - sadly I already feel like a single parent in a 2 parent household! It’s just the financial struggles 😭
edit - I’m a band 5 not 3, don’t know why it said that. But equally still not the best wage for a career I’ve worked so hard for

That makes a difference though. Will there be scope to apply for band 6/7 positions in time?

make a difference in regard to entitlement and support?
Probably but not yet. Only 1 year qualified and with mat leave on the way.

If you are mid band 5 then you may still get some. I would be in that bracket and could get £190 UC plus the Child Benefit.
You need to put in your actual salary and pensions etc and entitledto can give you an idea.
I think you can have up to £6k in savings without it impacting your claim, over that the claim reduces for every £250 above £6k, so you'd need to make sure that other savings were utilised buying a home.
And as pps have said you do get some wiggle room if the savings are for you to make a house purchase.
When me and my ex split they didn't expect us to fritter away the savings we had made to buy individual homes just to ge the UC, you had some time. It's better for the government if you have your own home and UC than getting council housing etc because you had to spend all your savings to claim the UC.

Have a look on entitled to, put your actual salary in and your hypothetical info if you were to leave, you can then see what you may or may not be entitled to x

Are you Nursing op? if so will childcare covering nights and weekends be a problem when you return after mat leave? Will your partner step up do you think?

Kay98765 · 14/09/2025 19:08

Thankyou everyone 😭 I know I’m not the first person in this position and certainly won’t be the last. It’s just so hard and such a huge decision when children are involved.
But I need to do right for me and my babies x

Yeah nursing.. Childcare is tricky as it is as, as nowhere covers for the shift times.
He’s not a bad dad to our son and he’ll do what he ‘has to’ but he definitely won’t make it easy for me 😔
