As the title suggests. Budget up to £300. He is into cooking and is also about to have long period of convalescence after surgery.
Keen to get something unusual.

Will he be fit to do cooking during his convalescence? Or any other activities ie would he knit, crochet, is he crafty etc?

PigletSanders · 06/09/2025 07:38

Sorry, this isn’t remotely useful, but lolling at the idea of my H unwrapping a £300 crochet gift 🤣 he’d be utterly bemused.

What about Northern Knives? They do cool Viking-style knives.

Ooni pizza oven?

MidnightPatrol · 06/09/2025 07:46

One of the adult Lego sets? Might be fun if convalescing.

Cooking related gifts there are countless things you could buy - but nothing convalescent specific!

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 06/09/2025 08:42

Pizza oven for the garden. Good knives (plus a sharpener). Mixer.

But a foodie might already have these!

Star Wars Le Crueset mini cocottes. No longer available in the shops but you can buy them on EBay.

  • unusual
  • cooking related
  • Star Wars
  • Impossibly cute

We have a few of these (this isn’t my listing). They are beautifully made and absolutely gorgeous if you like Le Crueset and you like Star Wars. There are some much more expensive pieces in the collection (the Han Solo in carbonite casserole dish is a joy to behold but it will cost about £1k these days).

There are experiences where you go to a forge and make your own knife (or sword) might not be great after an op though.

Some form of cooking course?

Knives, I have 2 a friend bought on my behalf from Japan. They are Damascus steel

You can buy them in the UK - here's a set for £350, they are beautiful to look at and cut really well.

I’d go for a Lego set. It will keep him occupied when he needs to sit and rest. Do you have all the streaming services - maybe subscribe to another one so he has a choice of viewing.

I don’t know if he would be able to physically- depends on the convalescence- but DH really enjoyed a butchery class he was given as a gift.

I think he will cook a little bit later into recovery.
Not crafty, but creative in terms of writing.

He would love this! Thank you. Maybe for after recovery. Yes!

A knife upgrade is a fab idea.

Sorry to go against the grain, but if I had surgery and was going to need time to convalesce, I'd be really fucking annoyed if someone got me a present designed to fill my time, like I was just gonna sit on my arse, staring into space, feeling sorry for myself.

The reason I asked was I've just spent 6 weeks bored and recuperating post surgery and things to do with my hands would have at least passed a few hours!

Would he appreciate a leather bound notebook ie Aspinalls, and a fancy pen ie a Montblanc (the entry level pen is £250ish)?

Cooking boxes ie Cookaway etc over the next few weeks so he can try new dishes out perhaps?

A creative writing course? https://www.open.ac.uk/courses/short-courses/axs001/

He is a writer so a nice notebook and pen would be appreciated I think.

It’s a good point.
