I’m in a new relationship with someone (few months) who has disclosed to me recently that she has suffered with depression for the last 30 years, since she was a teen. She has previously tried antidepressants and therapy but neither have worked.
in the last few years she has explored using drugs and is now using mdma and lsd every few weeks as well as micro dosing magic mushrooms daily.
im quite concerned. She seems totally functional and I’m really surprised at this news.
is this something to be concerned about and is there risks of tolerances/things getting worse with these drugs?
i really feel for her and care about her but I am worried about where things could potentially go here. If anyone has any knowledge about these drugs and advice that would be really appreciated. I’m a bit naive on the subject unfortunately

My DP uses all of those to try and deal with his depression and PTSD.

They are more effective when used sparingly, but there is increasing evidence that they can help to treat depression - preferably alongside therapy.

I can totally understand when conventional AD medications have failed, that trying to find alternatives feels like a proactive measure. Try to learn a bit about how these medications work and you can be supportive without fear.

It’s becoming more common, particularly for people who’ve suffered with depression or anxiety for most of their lives, with conventional drugs and therapy doing very little or absolutely nothing to alleviate their problems, to begin looking into the research base for things like MDMA and Psilocybin microdosing.

UCL, Kings and Imperial have collaborated in recent years with organisations like Drug Science and people like Professor Adam Winstock and Professor David Nutt on microdosing and ketamine therapy to treat mental distress and addiction; you might find some of their research studies interesting. Ultimately though, your girlfriend is a key person to ask about this. What research did she do, has she spoken about this with a therapist, does she belong to peer support groups, what impact - positive and negative - has she seen.
