Car insurance details need to be changed

So I foolishly paid for my exes car insurance as he had no money. The account, car and insurance are in my his name BUT the issue is that it's my bank details on the renewal and I dont want / am not willing to pay for another year of his insurance. He has blocked me everywhere, and aside from contacting his family (I really dont want to) I dont know how else I can stop the payment coming out of my account. It's not due until September so I have a few months - but wondered if anyone had ever had similar happen?

Speak to your bank and see if they can block any payments going out to that company.

Great idea! Thank you.

You should be able to see active direct debit payments on your banking app, even if they are only taken once a year. Just go in and cancel it and it will send a letter to him saying the DD has been cancelled.

Yeah i thought that too - but because it's a credit card, they arent listed. I've sent a message to the bank to see if they can block payments.

It's a renewal that uses the bank details that were used originally. On my credit card. Oh no, I will not be paying anyone's bills EVER EVER again. This is the tip of iceberg!

Cancel your credit card get a new one

TwistedWonder · 06/07/2025 16:56

If your bank can’t block the payment then cut up your credit card, tell the bank you’ve lost it and get a new one sent.

Any attempt to use your ‘lost’’ card will be flagged as potential fraud and be rejected.

Can’t you just contact your credit card company and explain to them that you want to cancel the payment? Am I missing something as that seems a very obvious course of action?

100% agreed - this would be the case for a direct debit on a a debit card, but for a credit card it's apparently not so simple. Although Lloyds bank have replying very fast and are letting me know.

Why dont you just phone the insurance company??

Vaxtable · 06/07/2025 17:13

Phone your credit card company and tell them to delete the payment so it can’t be claimed again. Then if you know the insurance details call them and tell them the same

The insurance company won't be able to do anything unless OP is authorised by her ex on the account. It would be a breach of Data Protection.

Is it a CPA (continuous payment authority) ?
If it is there is information on Google with the steps to stop it.
If you just paid as a one off there isn't a problem the renewal will go to your ex and he will arrange to pay I assume he doesn't have your card details.

Thank you. That’s really helpful.

I don’t actually know. My concern is that like my own insurance it’s on an automatic renewal that uses the original payment details. And I’m pretty sure he’d just let it roll.
I’ve contacted Lloyds so will see what they can do. If not I’ll have to pay it off and close the card.

OP
you can tell the insurers you are withdrawing consent for them to take the payment.
secondly you can instruct your bank you withdraw your consent for the payment.
or if you have online banking just freeze your card for a week

Its really really not that complicated

OnTheBoardwalk · 06/07/2025 19:23

My credit card expired before my Churchill car renewal went through. No payment went through and they contacted me for another way to pay. CPA payments tend to bd for subscription type payments

why do you need to pay your balance off? Just tell them you’ve lost your current card and they'll cancel it and send you a new card
