Have I been exposed to an STD?

I might be over thinking here which is common for me when it comes to sexual health.

I’ve been seeing someone for a couple of months and last night we decided to DTD.

the condom went on and then he realised it was the wrong way round so put it the right way - I didn’t see it happen as it was dark and I thought it was just taking a while, but we went to DTD but I was a bit nervous so we didn’t, but his area did touch me.

afterwards he made a lighthearted comment about how he forgot which way it went which I then said did you get a new one or use the same one and he said he used the same one.

I then panicked and asked when the last time he slept with someone was and whether he was tested. He said it was a year ago and hasnt been tested since but he says that he used something that night.

however in my head all I can think is it’s very easy for him to have done it the wrong way last time and contracted something. Or worse easy for someone to say they used something and didn’t.

i actually stopped everything we were doing and left as I felt like I’d really messed up and hadn’t taken my sexual health seriously. On the way home I ordered a home testing kit.

my friends say I’m over thinking it and the level of exposure is probably quite minimal. But I can’t help but worry. What’s everyone’s thoughts on a situation like this?

I think you're overthinking, it all seems a bit over the top but I suppose you can never be too careful when it comes to your health.
I think you should check though as I think you could be doing the test too soon after the potential exposure.

There's no point in testing yet OP. It's like testing for pregnancy just after sex.

Maybe you should be in charge of putting on the condoms.

Probably quite a low risk, if he used a condom the last time (a year ago) and hasn't shown symptoms since. Also he hadn't ejaculated. I would get tested for peace of mind and maybe again in six weeks just in case.

WayneEyre · 01/06/2025 09:45

Yes, I don't mean test now today, i mean order the test and maybe wait a week or so.

It’s incredibly unlikely. You didn’t have sex, and when it comes to things like herpes and genital warts - also unlikely - which can be passed by skin-skin contact, they aren’t prevented by a condom anyway so you’re at no higher risk because the condom had been inside out than if it hadn’t been. Take an STD test in a couple of weeks’ time to put your own mind at rest, but don’t fret in the meantime.

Thanks everyone. Just waiting for the kit to arrive and will give it a week and then test. Fingers crossed all is ok.

I work in sexual health. It’s quite unlikely, no. The infections that are spread by skin to skin contact (herpes and HPV) can be transmitted even if you wear a condom.

The ones that are transmitted more by what comes out of the penis are primarily spread through semen or discharge. I would think you’d notice if he had a lot of discharge coming out of his penis, enough to go onto to condom from the start. It’s not impossible, but it’s unlikely.

If you are doing a home sampling kit, do read the instructions about window periods after exposure before taking the sample. If you just had sex last night, the test will not yet provide an accurate result. You have to wait until after the window period is finished, which could be 2 weeks or even longer. It will be specific to the test used and the infections being tested. If you take it too soon, it may say you are negative when you are in fact positive, which sort of defeats the point.
