What do you do when you are home alone?

What do you actually do when you’re home alone?
Asking as an introvert who’s currently padding around the flat waiting for my boyfriend to come home.
Could be daytime or night — I’m curious.

I live alone and don’t have a boyfriend. Can you not entertain yourself while he’s not around? Read a book, watch the tv, go out?

MewithME · 30/03/2025 15:25

I don't have a partner and I am at home alone regularly now due to chronic illness.

Generally I can enjoy lots of home based stuff....

Cooking
Long bath with a podcast
Watch films or TV
Do housework listening to podcast or audiobook or music
Read
Phone friends
Have a nap
National Theatre at home subscription is brill

In better days or when I was well and had a dog I'd be out for a long walk somewhere nice

Sometimes go to a café for a nice coffee and take a book

Potter around garden centres too. .

MewithME · 30/03/2025 15:26

I don't think even when I was married I found myself waiting for him to come home?

Do you have anxiety issues? What's stopping you entertaining yourself?

applegrumbling · 30/03/2025 15:26

Doesn’t track that you’re an introvert if this is what you do when you’re alone!

Maitri108 · 30/03/2025 15:30

I watch TV, cook, shop, listen to music/podcasts, clean, read, wash clothes, talk on the phone.

ohnowwhatcanitbe · 30/03/2025 15:39

Eat, drink tea or coffee, read a book or a magazine, catch up with news online, clear out my sock drawer, watch the telly, do Sudoku, wash up, look at clips of erupting volcanoes on Youtube, listen to music, groom the cat, think about adding to my vintage costume jewellery collection and have a look on Ebay, sit staring into space, do some random tidying... any of the above really.

imnina · 30/03/2025 15:44

Okay wait — just to clarify:
I’m not actually waiting for him like a lost puppy.
I just need something to do before I start re-organising the spice rack again.

Read.. bath.. cook.. watch tv... laundry/cleaning if the mood takes me.. nice brew or wine in my pyjamas... nap!

QueefQueen80s · 30/03/2025 15:46

Workout, tv, music, reading, gaming, garden, crafts, house stuff, go out somewhere

saveforthat · 30/03/2025 15:56

I don't think you are an introvert, if you were you would crave time alone

Gymbunny2025 · 30/03/2025 16:01

Go for a walk/run it’s so sunny!

Gymbunny2025 · 30/03/2025 16:03

I’m waiting for family to get home so we can visit my mum. I have done laundry, hung it out to dry, stretched (gym this morning) and currently eating crisps. Time well spent imho 😂

mondaytosunday · 30/03/2025 16:04

Phone, read, crochet, watch TV, tidy, nap, go for a walk…

uncomfortablydumb60 · 30/03/2025 16:06

I live alone so do everything that needs to be done adding Netflix, TV, music and of course Mumsnet into my day.
Apart from when my boys were teenagers, I have never waited for anyone to come home but I’m happy in my own company.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 30/03/2025 16:09

Today for example I’ve done laundry and put it outside
put my rubbish out
Put new photos in my frames which came yesterday
Drank 3 big mugs of coffee
cleaned kitchen worktops
Now laying on my bed, with the sun streaming through the window.

Cynic17 · 30/03/2025 16:15

Enjoy it!
Basically, when I am alone I do all the things that I also do when the Other Half is here, eg read, listen to the radio, watch TV, housework (the bare minimum, if I absolutely have to), eat a meal, make plans to go out etc etc.
Why is being in the house alone such an issue for you, OP?

Shodan · 30/03/2025 16:18

Generally it goes one of two ways. Productive days might include gardening, doing lots of laundry, cleaning the kitchen (again), doing random bits of DIY that I've either just noticed or have been bugging me for a while, clean the car, go for a walk/bike ride, phone my brother for a long chat (c.2 hours), have a long bath, definitely have a nap, watch crappy films or scary ones (sometimes they're both), crochet, get the sewing machine out and make a dress, clearing out the loft or garage, read a book, shout back at my elderly and very deaf cat, make some jewellery, ... the list is endless tbh.

Or it might be a complete lazy day where the most I accomplish is putting a frozen pizza in the oven. These days are rare but needed at the time, I find.

Gymbunny2025 · 30/03/2025 16:19

Have you not been out all weekend OP is that why you’re so bored? Do you have more social anxiety than being an introvert?

ICanTellYouMissMe · 30/03/2025 16:30

Practice my musical instrument
Read while listening to music
Have an everything shower
Do the NY Times crossword
Edit photos (am a photographer)
Have some, er, alone time 😁

SchrodingersTwat2 · 30/03/2025 16:30

I've been divorced for 20 years. I usually do the following:

DIY
Gardening
Mending things
Art
Play the piano
Play chess online
Check or rejig my finances
Watch TV
Cook, clean, launder
Phone friends
Make cakes, chutney, jam, yoghurt etc

GroovyChick87 · 30/03/2025 16:32

Housework, prepare dinner, watch TV, read a book, have a cup of tea or wine depending on time of day, have a bath, masturbate.

Shegotanology · 30/03/2025 16:34

I love watching films, reading, going on my treadmill, whittling wood, and gardening indoors and out.

SparklyBrickViper · 30/03/2025 16:35

Enjoy myself.

Eat whatever I want at whatever time I want.

Watch an entire episode of something without someone talking over it or popping into the room to make random statements about irrelevant things.

Cook/bake without someone coming into the tiny kitchen because that’s when the have to make tea/lunch/randomly open cupboards.

Make the most of complete peace.

user1471538275 · 30/03/2025 16:36

As above, enjoy the peace and quiet.

And mumsnet, clearly.

category12 · 30/03/2025 16:40

Draw, read, watch telly, go for a walk, stare at the sea/river, game, spend time with pets, doom-scroll, jigsaw, DIY, focus on a project.
