Can you recommend a contraception for us older mums??

Besides the male condom of course....Can any one suggest another form of contraception... Has any one any opinions about the female condom or the coil for 40plus mums like me who definately do not want any more kids. Dont suppose there is a pill for my age group. 40-50 years ??????

Mirena coil - I love it, and allows you to be totally spontaneous because let's face it, when you have the urge and the privacy you don't want to be rustling round with a female condom (AKA tesco carrier bag...)

Copper coil - fabulous!

provided you have no other contraindictions - such as hypertension, diabetes, history of stroke/DVT, or are a smoker or obese - you can take the combined pill up until the menopause.

speak to your local Family Planning Clinic or well-woman centre about it.

I have a Mirena coil too - ab fab!!

Coil is good, can leave in til menopause after 50 (either Mirena or copper).

What do you think abt sterilisation?

Depo or Implant also good alternatives. Expat is right re pills.

I have used diapragm for about 24 years now without any problems. We were using it when we had our (planned) children and it has never failed us. You need to use it with a gel which is available on NHS prescription,(free) but only in small tubes. I buy much bigger tubes via a US website for a good price. We have never had a problem with the 'spontaneous' aspect of sex and believe me, there have been times when we have been VERY spontaneous!

Also had a smear yesterday and discussed the coil but reading forms on the internet not too sure. Has anyone tried the "implant" in the arm that does for 3 years.

hey little sidetrack hijack- mirena coil users, got mine fitted 3 weeks ago. When will the bleeding stop?

Bleeding Problems: These are without a doubt the most common problem associated with the Mirena. It takes about 3 months for the lining of the womb to thin down and during this time bleeding can be erratic or even heavy at times, but almost always settles after 3-6 months. During the first month, 20% of users experience prolonged bleeding of more than 8 days duration, but by the third month only 3% have prolonged bleeding.

Another Mirena user and enthusiast here. I found that I had odd breakthrough bleeding for about the first six months, and very occasionally now (um, 5+ years on?) but otherwise it's brilliant.

I've also changed from PMS monthly to about one day a year. But I'm murderous on that one day lol!

I used to like my copper coil. I'm in my 40s and up the duff, coil in place, pg in place!
