Since my DS was born, the MIL hasn't has a good word to say about the way Im bringing him up! (and Im putting my heart and soul into it) Critisism and comparing to her daughter are getting me down. Im not very good with words though, and never know what to say at the right moment (without causing a family ruck) apart from P off has anyone got any ideas how I can politely tell her to lay off me!!

My MIL is lovely, it's my mother who is the problem. Her MIL was evil to her (called her a Jewish Bitch among other things and talked loudly about foreigners returning to their own country in my great gran's hearing - nice.) and sadly, I think my mother feels she is getting her own back by being nasty to my DH. I do think it is difficult to be too nasty - my DH says I am a wuss for not confronting my mother, but I suppose I am more on the side of an easy life.

Hi again - comments like that about doing your own food do sound very undermining and at the smoking one. She might think what you do is "unnecessary" but the answer to that is - you're right it's not "necessary" but there's no harm in giving him the best is there?
