Her indoors

Hmmm…

DH was showing me something on his phone and I clocked a text referring to me as “her indoors “ on a family ( male) whatsapp.

It was in relation to potentially going on a weekend away ,that he’d have to check ,might not happen, etc
We are both very busy at the moment with work & family so that’s fair enough.

I feel a bit funny about it..think it paints me as domineering ..and would just prefer if he’d said my name ..I never look at his phone usually.

He thinks I’m overreacting and shouldn’t look at his phone anyhow.
Maybe I am being too sensitive and it’s just a blokey expression 🤷‍♀️but interested in thoughts!

Well it just sounds so old fashioned and dated.
I'd be disappointed in my DH if he used expressions like this.
You did right to question it with him.

Brandyb · 07/03/2025 21:41

Can't say I would get worked up about it, but depends what he's like otherwise. I don't think it paints you as domineering to say he has to check with you, esp if you have kids. I'm thinking it was a jokey way to refer to you? Almost could be affectionate?
It honestly depends on the dynamics.

It's a joke, it's funny

From a sitcom called Minder in the 1980s.

And it doesn't mean domineering! Rather the opposite.

NotVeryFunny · 07/03/2025 21:47

I think you are being over sensitive. It's not derogatory.

StarDolphins · 07/03/2025 21:52

I don’t think I would be upset with this if he’s otherwise respectful.

My ex used to refer to our home as ‘my house’ and if he rang a tradesman etc he would say I need a door at my house’ which used to irk me. Especially since it was our house despite it actually being my house since I paid for the bloody thing!🤣

Edited

Yes it's from Minder which is why it sounds so dated!

I know they do reruns of it on TV but attitudes and language have moved on since the 1980s.

Okay .Thanks all !
It seems I was indeed maybe overthinking it …not an expression I’m familiar with before so thanks for the background 😁

It is of the same ilk as "the old ball and chain". Sounds like joking around about being under the thumb.

I would probably avoid reading his private messages as they do say an eavesdropper rarely hears good about themselves.

I mean, if he's disrespectful towards you in your relationship generally then that's different.

I hate the term ‘The Wife’. So many men use the term. Fortunately my DH doesn’t. He knows better!
