Claire's Law - question

I've been reading the other Claire's Law request, and know I can google this, but have been considering it for quite some time with/for a friend and would love to have any insight from anyone here who can give insight on her behalf as she's scared to contact police but will likely do so, just wanting to know a few things. Sorry if these are basic questions:

  • is there a limit time wise, and does the relationship still need to be "live"?
  • what if the person has changed addresses/locations a few times? She knows most recent address, but not previous region. Is it regional? If so does more than one police force have to be contacted, or just the current?
  • might it covered all types of things, including things not just violence, but maybe involving other forms of abuse, or crime generally that might not fall under the DV bracket?

Any help welcome

The relationship does have to be 'live' - you can't do a Clare's law request if you are not in a relationship with that person.

If there is still contact, which is unwanted, this can be reported to police.

They will only disclose events that could have a direct impact upon the woman in the relationship. E.G - if there was fraud or burglary charges for example, they wouldn't be shared.

Violence, aggression would be shared. Possibly possession with intent to supply (particularly if there are children involved) and they are living together.

Hope that helps.

Yes disclosure is only if the relationship is current or there is ongoing involvement due to children/pregnancy.
Just apply to your local force and they can collate any information.
It’ll only include offences necessary for the partner to protect themselves/children, so yes predominantly violent offence as there is limited justification for sharing anything further although in some circumstance this can happen.
