Are there better men out there?

Feeling really glum over OLD. I’m just left swiping everyone. All the time! I keep pausing my profile or deleting it too. I have tried Tinder, Hinge and Bumble on and off over the last 2 years. No luck at all. I’m a 52 year old female btw. I am not sure if the ‘pool’ is very poor, it’s me being too fussy or the platform just doesn’t suit me.

I enjoy being outdoors…walks/hikes/photography and like to travel, when I can. Told I’m attractive by men (usually married). Good career in the health service. Regularly spend long weekends in London/Surrey (I’m from up north). Work keeps me busy and, I will admit, I’m not one for joining hiking groups or anything like that. Is it just game over? Or, am I looking in the wrong place?

This sounds like a dating profile 😂.

Anyway, a family member (aged 66 and F) had no problem and has now being seeing someone a year or so. They go all over the place together! I thought I was too old but obviously not.

Am I destined to be alone??

Sadly the older you get the smaller the pool of eligible men becomes. And it's not a big pool to start with considering (imo) most men are dross to start.

I do know women in their 50s who have met partners on OLD. It's never worked for me though. I'm 46 and personally feel like it's definitely game over. So depressing.

Try the younger men on OLD, if you haven’t already 🙂

My late DF found a partner in his 80s (not on OLD of course) - don't give up hope!

BitOutOfPractice · 10/02/2025 06:24

I know you say you’re not one for joining groups but I’d try a few rambling groups tbh.

OLD is soul destroying. It’s a numbers game and the decent men are few and far between but they are there.

good luck op

Most men are not dross.

There are better men but you have to change your perception. Expand your horizons- go for younger men.

Gettingbysomehow · 10/02/2025 07:18

I'd love to meet someone to retire with but it doesn't look likely. I can't seem to meet a man I could possibly have any respect for.

I’ve only had bad experiences with OLD, I stopped trying to use them and went back to real life. I unexpectedly fell in friendship, then love, with a neighbour and we’ve been incredibly happy for years now. My friend got in to sailing, and found her partner in that community, another friend met her partner at a New Year’s dance and another at dog obedience classes.. It helps, I think, that we are all old enough to remember that people did meet very successfully before OLD.
It doesn’t have to be hiking groups, just a mind open to possibilities around you and maybe getting more involved in the hobbies you do like?

TwistedWonder · 10/02/2025 07:34

I’m in my 50’s and given up. I’m attractive outgoing confident very sociable, out most weekends and in 5 years single not met anyone.

Ive tried most of the dating apps and barely get past a couple of days chatting. I’ve had a handful of first dates - about 10 - in those 5 years and only 2 led to a second.

My OLD experience has been a complete waste of time so I think I’ve realised I’ll be di for forever and I’m ok with that now.

Maybe if you change your attitude to men a littte that might benefit you.

Going with the mindset that most men are dross, instantly puts you in a negative mindset, and the reality is, there are plenty of good men out there, but obviously not every man is going to be right for you.

Cheesandcrackers · 10/02/2025 10:59

Sometimes you have to kiss a few frogs in order to find the best frog. Starting with the "men are dross" opinion isn't helpful.

DemonicCaveMaggot · 10/02/2025 11:03

I think you are going to have to join groups and societies to meet other people otherwise how are you going to meet them if OLD isn't working for you?

Mumto42005 · 10/02/2025 11:10

Try Badoo. It is the app I've had most success on over the years ☺️

username299 · 10/02/2025 11:14

I would stay on the apps but use them alongside doing other things. Join groups and activities where there are lots of men eg cycling club, golf, tennis - they often have events for members.
