Is there an app for making friendships with men but not dating? I have been single for a long time but not looking at dating right now but do miss having chats with men and I have no male friends. Joining a dating app feels wrong and I don't want to mess anyone around so is there an app for making friends with men? Any recommendations? I miss having someone to message in the evenings so would be nice to have someone to chat to

Bumble had a BFF section.

I’ve not tried it but apparently Badoo does have people looking to chat rather than date

Is that for making male friends as well? Only heard of people making female friends on there

Lol, BFF on dating sites is just another way of saying 'man splits the bill and then gets pissy after a few days out with you when you haven't shown interest in him'

LemonLemo · 26/01/2025 20:47

I'm not looking to meet up I mean purely messaging

you could probably just exchange numbers with someone from a dating app if you just want to swap chat messages/have a text buddy.

Many matches never want to meet IRL/aren't who they say they are.

If you said on your profile you just want to platonic message and can't meet they'd be fine.

What about Interpals (for penpals)?

I imagine many of the contacts you meet this way will be catfishes and/or from another country.

Just don't send nudes or give them money or give them any of YOUR personal details so they can track you down on socials or linkedin. And don't take them too seriously.

Try HelloTalk, it's primarily a language learning app but it's quite easy to make friends there to just message. I am male and I have made several (entirely platonic) friendships with women on there whom I've never met in person and almost certainly never will.

jubs15 · 27/01/2025 07:29

If you don't want to actually meet or talk over the phone, then Interpals is good. I have several male pen friends from there who I've been writing to for a number of years.

Meetup.
I've not used it, but came across a bunch of people at a comedy show that had found eachother there.

Hi Op, I often have the similar thoughts. What exactly do you want to talk about in these messages though? Will it not turn into friend without benefit?

Carlyhouse · 27/01/2025 08:30

The problem is not the app. It's the behaviour of people inside it.

I don't see what's mad about it? I use to have a lot of male friends I met them on SM but I was a lot younger and I don't use SM now, we never met up but exchanged numbers and would talk in the evenings, if it's only friendship why they need to meet up? I lost touch with them when I got with my ex as he didn't like it which was fair enough.

I don't think dating apps would be the best place as even if they said they were ok with friendship I suspect they would be looking for more

Hmm, tricky one. It sounds like you want something like a penpal in which case there are some good suggestions above. I have to say, I would be very uncomfortable with my partner having a friend he has never met but chats to via text frequently, but then if you want to talk platonically to single men wouldn’t they be more likely to be looking for a relationship? That said, I’ve just had a Google and you can do 1-1 messaging or letter writing with members of the armed forces stationed overseas:

There is probably a similar one for prisons though I’d be very careful about that!

I did think of the prison one more just out of intrigue but I have children so definitely wouldnt consider that. I am single now so that's not a problem I just meant I lost touch with my old online friends due to my ex at the time not liking it.
