My boyfriend and I have been together for 5 year, and I think he's finally planning to propose, the problem is that I think it's going to be in the most awful way...I always wanted a proposal that is just the two of us, something romantic without any people there.. and he knows it! Lately I've been getting some clues from friends and family implying it's gonna be a big proposal with everyone...I know it'd not that of a big deal and he's trying to do something nice for me, but I can't help but thinking that this is the first step of our joined life together, and if he can't do what I really want, should I even Marry him?

This should put him off - On holiday , we witnessed a man (down on one knee) proposing to his girlfriend on an empty dance floor. We were sitting at tables around the edge. Plenty of people called out to her 'don't do it"!!!

I think big public proposals are more about him (look at what a romantic guy I am!) than about you. And that is off putting, especially if you are the sort of person who does not like the limelight.

That said, you don't know if he will do it this way so no point getting worked up now.

It’s real life dear not a Barbara Cartland novel. You can’t always have what you want, but you might find you get what you need.
Do you want to spend the rest of your life with this person is the question.
not how the proposal is done.

My former husband had no common sense.
It didn’t really hit home until after we had been married for awhile and he made the absolute dumbest decisions in the easiest situations.

If this engagement question is but one of many scenes where you find yourself second guessing your boyfriend, I’d second guess your decision about marrying him.

It doesn’t get any better.

My apologies for being the negative nellie.

I agree, it would be nice and to be honest you are probably more nervous of the unknown - and how to react.

DH proposed in be one Christmas morning.

Perfect.

The fact that you’re asking “ should I marry him?” On a public forum suggests not!

Ggmores · 10/12/2024 22:36

Well no. Sounds like you don’t want to marry him, or you think your ideals are incompatible, or you don’t listen to each other. If you want to get married do. But marriages are made of compromises, if this is a no then you’re unsuited.
