Birth order - did you marry the same?

DH and I are both 2nd children. We both have big sisters.

They have both married oldest brothers.

My mum and dad are both youngest children.

Is this really common?

I’m an only child, my mother was too. I married an only child. Not sure what that means in the grand scheme? Oh & btw… I don’t have any children through choice.🥴

BookishBabe · 03/12/2024 16:18

Strange.
I'm the eldest of 8 (lots of half siblings) and my DH is the eldest of 2.

Alarae · 03/12/2024 16:18

Both have 2 siblings, but DH is middle (it shows!) and I am youngest.

My oldest sister's partner is the youngest sibling (I believe- definitely not the oldest though).

Middle sister is a single Pringle.

Oldest BIL's partner is the oldest sibling (of 2).

Middle SIL's partner might also be a middle sibling- never asked!

StrawberryWater · 03/12/2024 16:20

My dh is the oldest and married first.

I'm the third oldest of 8 and married 5th.

GelatoPistacchio · 03/12/2024 16:20

I would have presumed that was rarer and a mix of birth order would balance out the partnership. But it makes sense that like can attract like.

I'm the eldest and my DH is a twin with an older sister too. It's interesting that he thinks of himself as the middle child even though he is only older than his brother by 30 mins!

Damnbrsatz · 03/12/2024 16:22

Im the oldest of 2, DH the oldest of 3
DM and DF both the youngest of 2
Both their older siblings married oldest children
My younger brother married an only

justfornow1 · 03/12/2024 16:22

I'm oldest, dh middle

DM oldest DF middle

DSis youngest, BIL oldest

DB middle SIL oldest

No pattern here sorry!

justfornow1 · 03/12/2024 16:23

Interesting though

TubeScreamer · 03/12/2024 16:41

Yes, both the oldest

LondonLawyer · 04/12/2024 16:51

In my family, yes. DH and I are both the oldest. My parents each have one older brother. My sister (3rd child)'s partner is the younger of two. My brother (4th child)'s partner is the youngest of 3.

yeesh · 04/12/2024 17:18

my husband and I are both first born. My dad is first born & my mum is the seventh born but they’ve been divorced for over 30 years lol

NewName24 · 04/12/2024 17:31

No, no patterns me and dh, any of our siblings and their OHs, and of our dc and their OHs.

JTRSOP · 04/12/2024 17:33

No, and I don’t understand why it would even be the case.

I’m child number 7 (of 11, so a middle child) and my husband is the eldest of two brothers.

VarioPerfect · 04/12/2024 17:35

DH and I are both the eldest, and nearly all of our friends are eldest or only children - weird!

My siblings are single but DH’s bro (middle child) is married to an oldest child, who definitely bosses him around. His sis (youngest) is married to a youngest.

I think people are more likely to be attracted to those who are similar to them, but might clash more too.

Rocknrollstar · 04/12/2024 17:57

We are both the middle one and definitely bonded over our differences to our siblings and the problems of being in the middle. So much so, we agreed not to have 3 children.

user2848502016 · 04/12/2024 18:55

No, I'm an eldest sister married to a youngest brother. I think it does make a difference to relationship dynamics

Sassybooklover · 04/12/2024 19:26

I'm an only child, my husband is the eldest of 4 children. My Dad is the 3rd child (out of 7!) and my Mum is the eldest of 2. My sister-in-law is the 2nd child (out of 4) and married a youngest child (out of 3). Not sure there's a pattern, in my family!!
