Skint, tired, but too young to sit and watch TV every night...ways for DP and I to have fun

We're only 26 and 27 respectively, all our friends are still childless and mostly still single, still going clubbing etc, while our lives have changed immessurably since DD was born (17mths ago).

We very rarely get a babysitter so one of us going out means the other is stuck in. We need to have fun together.

Who has some good, cheap ideas to keep us entertained and happy?

Thanks! x

I've got one...

Sorry, always lowering the tone!

dizzydixies · 29/04/2008 09:36

whipped cream and chocolate spread!

dh and I are the same, if a few years older and we have people round a lot for meals once the kids are in bed

doesn't need to be anything expensive

we 'treated' ourselves to a Wii as well so when they do come over its a cheap meal/ cheap bottle of wine and a games night

we are younger than you, we play games, have a bath together, get some wine, play cards (naughty or normal!), cook together.

I am old, so advice will probbaly be wrong, however, We always enjoy making an extra effort with dinner, putting the kids to bed then having a candle lit dinner for 2 at the kitchen table. NO TELLY
We have a games night once a week, no telly, no computer just a few games of cards or scrabble or jigsaw puzzles. etc.
Also going out for a walk together on a summers evening, if you can find someone to babysit (or go early evening and take baby with you)

Indith · 29/04/2008 09:41

We play scrabble a fair bit.

Or this is a fab game. Not so great for the skint aspect as they do cost a fair bit to buy but so much fun, you have birthdays coming up at all?

littlewoman · 29/04/2008 09:44

doing a crossword together (buy the sunday times and the crossword will take you a whole week to do. Now that's value for money ) Jigsaws are actually really good fun together, with a bottle of wine, and you can get them very cheap at 2nd hand shops.

Of course, I also thought of the same activity as NickyTT. That can work out exensive in the long run though, if you get pregnant lol.

Laugs · 29/04/2008 09:46

Our main interest pre-DD was basically going out clubbing, so that really doesn't help, but we both love music.

I like the CD reviewing idea. We tried that with 1000 Albums To Listen To Before You Die, but think that was a bit ambitious!

Actually, we played games on Sunday night and it was fun. We're just stuck in a routine of watching crap telly every evening most days.

Might try a walk in the park this evening if weather stays nice...

to quote Neds Atomic Dustbin (crusty 90's music reference) 'Kill Your Television'

if it's not on then you will find the motivation to talk to each other and do productive stuff.

we really love time in the kitchen, and lots of friends of ours have a 'kitchen evening'......we stick BBC 6 or Radio 4 on, will have picked a lovely recipe out of a book and spend the evening preparing dinner, listening to the radio and talking and laughing. And we get a lovely meal at the end of it.

branflake81 · 29/04/2008 11:22

this is an interesting thread as I/we are in the same position. "Kitchen evening" not really possible chez nous as you can only fit one person in at a time!

I like the games idea although not sure how keen DP wil be....I always whup his ass at scrabble.

FYIAD · 29/04/2008 11:26

dh and I had a lovely week when the telly was broken

we had baths and chatted or did the garden

witchandchips · 29/04/2008 11:32

working out dance rountines to cheesy tracks?

Laugs · 29/04/2008 13:47

Yes, I think a 'no TV' rule at least a couple of nights a week sounds good

(will check the guide now to make sure I'm not missing anything...)

We can't fit two in our kitchen either - unless we were involved in nickytwotimes' suggestion! Where did those days go, eh?

Actually, now the weather's getting warmer I might try and clear out our tiny yard so we can stay out for drinks once DD goes to bed. Ooh, I'm actually getting excited!

On summer evenings we light the chimnea on the terrace and snuggle up to it with a bottle of wine (remember to put napkins over wine glasses to avoid drinking beasties!) and some outdoor candles & have the music on quietly thru' the door. You can take your baby monitor.

Laugs · 29/04/2008 13:52

That sounds lovely!

Our yard is full of junk at the moment, but that gives me a mission for tomorrow at least.
