post natal contraceptives?

lilimama · 23/04/2008 20:28

don't know where this post should go. Anyone?

condoms are ruining my sex life. I go dry and it's just not the same anymore.
Does anyone have experience of the mirena?
I don't fancy a hormonal rollercoaster and have reacted really badly to pill and plasters in the past. if not the mirena, any other suggestions?
DS 1 is 16 weeks, hope to start on number 2 in a year or so.

mirena is good for long term contraception.....it can take a few months to settle down but it is effective.

do you use lube with the condoms? are you, ahem, sufficiently aroused?

there are implants and injections but can really mess up your cycle

might be best to see family planning clinic or doctor who specialises in this sort of thing

canofworms · 23/04/2008 20:32

If you don't want hormones what about a copper coil?

YouCantTeuchThis · 23/04/2008 20:36

I would go for a lubricant in the first instance. Durex Play is good and no nasty, rusty wee tubes and lids!

Mini-pill is suitable for bfing mums, but is apparently not worth taking (or so I was told as the GP did a pg test before switching me to proper pill ). There are a great many different combined pills out there - I take a 2nd generation one - so you might get something more suitable.

Coils just scare me...

minster · 23/04/2008 21:04

Diaphragm?

I love mine - I won't use anything hormonal & hate condoms & don't think I could ever go for a coil.

BlaDeBla · 23/04/2008 21:15

I've got a bog standard copper coil, and it's so easy! It may take a while to settle down, but there's nothing to remember, no awful side-effects and it's easy to have taken out and you're back to where you were!

pantiesandsussies · 23/04/2008 21:31

Go to your FP clinic they give out free lube. If not have an Implanon its a three yr Long Acting Reversible Contraceptive. it has less hormones than any pill, and has a really good track record and in some cases it can even stop periods.

Alexa808 · 24/04/2008 04:25

Had Mirena in which gave me stabbing, knife in womb sort of pains and painful intercourse.

How about patches? I used Evra till I started working on baby. It worked perfectly well. ou just place it on hip or bum or tum or any slightly cushioned/'fatty' region of your body and it works like a dream. When you decide going for TTC you just take it off.

I was really really pleased with it and will use it again.

Alexa808 · 24/04/2008 04:27

Sorry dear, just read you tried plasters. Duh! I'm really blind today. Another option is an implant in your upper arms which quite a few doctors swear by and it's not as painful as inserting the coil. The hormonal dose is very low, too.

SHEENA1 · 24/04/2008 12:12

I have been on the new mini pill cerazette and i have no problems i tried a few of the others and made me ill this one so far so good

pantiesandsussies · 24/04/2008 22:19

Sheena - cerazette is what they gave me as a precursor to the implant.

lilimama · 25/04/2008 17:32

hi...thanks for the suggestions. i think of the copper coil but having something sharply inserted thru my cervix so soon after a very very painful and lengthy labour (altho it was 4 months ago, almost!)makes me wanna faint. oh god, what to do.....

cerazette could be intereting tho the hormonal trip has always driven me to crazy heights to abnormal behaviour before.

hmmm.

I've got a 3 month old and have had the Implanon implant and so far no side effects to notice. Nice to not have to keep popping a pill every day. I have the implant and can forget about it for 3 years so no panics over forgotten pills.

lilimama · 25/04/2008 20:01

hi there
regarding the implant...what are the hormone levels compared to a standard (if there is such a thing) such as Mycrogynon etc.

OP posts:
youngbutnotdumb · 25/04/2008 20:18

I ave the Implanon implant too and I hav had it for 1 and a half years now and have had no side effects apart from the odd dodgy period every few months. Nothing serious. Don't know the hormone levels though. All they do is give you a local anasthetic in your arm then make a small cut and insert it into your arm. It looks huge in the packaging but is about 3 cm long so not bad. Doesnt hurt a bit

cazboldy · 25/04/2008 20:21

Another vote for the copper coil.

It's not sharp, and it didn't hurt - was just uncomfortable and had crampy feelings for a day or 2

dizietsma · 25/04/2008 20:26

Get the non-hormonal coil. That's what I got and it's fine, better than all other types of contraception I've ever tried (all of them except rhythm method).

Hormonal contraception doesn't work for me either, had some terrible health issues after getting the jag. There's a thread in health that talks about Mirena and the women there described very similar effects to the effects I had on the jag, so I'd advise avoiding any hormonal contraception if you have any doubts.

betterhalf · 26/04/2008 13:18

Not absolutely positive about the implant although I believe the hormone levels are lower than most pills. Don't quote me on that though!

emma1977 · 26/04/2008 13:34

Hormone levels with implanon are much lower than depo injection, mirena coil and daily pills.

If you don't like it, it can be removed and all the hormone is out of your system within 3 days.

hairtwiddler · 26/04/2008 13:48

Also have copper coil. Not a problem having it inserted, was only cross I didn't do it earlier after faffing about with condoms for ages. Periods are a bit heavier and a little bit crampier. Don't notice it really, especially since I converted to mooncup!

nobodyputsBBinthecorner · 26/04/2008 14:15

i had a copper coil up until end f march, had it out, and period just come aftrer a 64 day cycle but i wld recommend it only word orf warning would be that i had heavy periods with mine (it was non hormonal) and my eriods started to get irregular, it wasnt too bad coming out tho

cazboldy · 26/04/2008 16:26

hairtwiddler - when I asked on here about using a mooncup with a coil I was told no as someone had had there's come out because of the suction!

hairtwiddler · 26/04/2008 16:50

Not happened to me yet! Besides, you need to break the seal when you take it out. TMI but if you just pull on it you will get a suction issue!

cazboldy · 26/04/2008 18:13

thanks

might give it a go after all

pantiesandsussies · 26/04/2008 20:05

Cazboldy - My mam is a fp doctor she told me that there was a lady last year whose coil was pulled out with her mooncup. so it is not unheard of, I mean you are always told not to use tampons for two periods because the coil could get stuck in your tampon so why would a moon cup be any different.

cazboldy · 26/04/2008 22:06

or maybe not.......
