How old is too old ? Dating older men

Pinkflowersxo · 26/08/2024 15:56

Im looking for some words of wisdom🤣

I am 28 newly single (last time I was single I was 19). Im just wondering what an appropriate age gap is ? My friend has said I should go for older men as they are more mature than the men my age. They are more accomplished and more responsible. Is there a rule for how much older someone should be than you as a woman ?

However , I don't want to be judgemental but I worry if men are single again at this age would they most likely be more likely to cheat and be a dog because they may have been married for years previously. I don't know . I was in a DV relationship for 9 years that took a lot of counselling and healing to get over. I don't want to make the wrong choices in men.

I don't want to close myself to a potential good relationship based on age but I don't know what men at this age are like, I know every man is different but if any women have any experience or lessons that I can learn from I would be grateful for the input. Xx

Double your age and take away fourteen

SoManyTshirts · 26/08/2024 17:07

If they’re never going to meet your children, then you’re looking for something fairly limited - go with whoever you fancy.

There’s no peak time for cheating, but you are likely have more in common with someone your own age.

Vile comment! Would you appreciate if similar was said about older women! You should be ashamed

OP, your posting history is worryingly chaotic.

At your age of 28, maybe up to 35. Don't go older than that at your age.
There's nothing appealing about much older men. Especially when they get past 50.

I am glad to read about your views on introducing a man to your children.

I think the half plus seven rule has some merit. So if you are 28, no one younger than 21 and not older than 42.

how about you just get out there and see who you click with

and none of this silliness from your friends about what you should or shouldn’t go for

a nice kind man would be a good start

I agree with this. I am not a fan of cookie cutter relationships where people line up nicely. because life is more complicated than that.

I was 29 when i met 50 year old DH we are now 50 and 71 and have 2 teens. We are immensely happy but also facing the reality of aging. But I have had 21 years of joy. It's more than many get. He's definitely my soulmate and I thank every day I met him.

That sounds ok in your 20s but the gap gets wider the older you get.

AhBiscuits · 26/08/2024 18:26

I wouldn't purposely go older. With age comes baggage. Find someone kind who has their shit together and whose vision for the future matches yours.

I really hope the ignorant people on this thread doesn't put off somebody from thinking about getting advice on DV on mums net. Unbelievable how some of you have gone through my threads and decided to tell me I am not allowed to date. The fact is I am not dating I am not ready right now but would be open to this and have been wanting opinions on certain things regarding dating as it's been 10 years for me ! Absolutely shocking

For goodness sake op, stop being so melodramatic. No one has said you’re not able to date EVER, just that it seems unwise now. And apparently, despite how your op came across, you’re not dating yet anyway… so why the offence? Having been in a physically and mentally abusive relationship myself, I know firsthand that it can take some time to even remotely feel in the right place for another relationship.
All that being said, you’re setting yourself up to fail if you take such a prescriptive view on relationships. Once you do ā€˜get back out there’, just see how it goes. There are no hard and fast rules.

No it doesn't. Depends entirely on the partners. At 63 puffing behind 78 yo DH taking ten flights of steps two at a time up a steep hill this afternoon...

BobbyBiscuits · 26/08/2024 22:54

At 28 I think that you could date your own age upto about 40? If the person was nice and compatible with you personality wise. I've dated 20 yrs older but only casually, as it wasn't really a serious thing, and 10 yrs older but the difference wasn't noticeable. My DH is one month exactly older than me. So, I'd say it's much more about the personality than the age.
I'd be wary of dating younger at 28 though.

if you are 28... and the relationship lasted 10 years, that means you were 18 when you entered into it, and not the 19 as stated in your OP. if you are newly single, when did you have the counselling?

Is there really such a massive difference between 18 and 19, maybe she was 18y and 10 months. Really a detail to get hung up on...
