Since I first found out about how he treated his wife (ie appallingly), I have been astonished at how many people gloss over this aspect of his life, starting with Miriam Margolyes who did a lecture on him as her favourite author; his abuse was mentioned but not condemned, and that seems to have been the pattern since with regards to this. I mean: the man forbade his children to see their mother, even when they were adults, and she never saw them till after his death - as I understand it (an prepared to be corrected) she ended up living nearby so she could catch a glimpse of them coming to and fro from the house....not to say how he besmirched he to the world in general!
And him portrayed as the great social reformer....
There is a useful phrase I find helps as I still like some of his writing:
'Decent author, indecent person'
(That phrase can be amended to whatever profession/activity suits)
