What does your partner do to make you laugh?

Just that really.

My DH is a good man - he provides for our family, he's great with the kids, he makes sure I get time to myself, he's honest, trustworthy, reliable and generous.

But he doesn't make me laugh.

I grew up in a family in which we laughed a lot and I've a good sense of humour. I love a joke and really enjoy the freedom of being silly with someone just for the laughs, but this is not something that comes naturally to him.

I will not be leaving him over this, but I do miss having someone who makes me giggle, so can you share some of the things your partner does to make you laugh so I can live vicariously through your experiences and be entertained by them please?

Randomly recites funny lines from Father Ted/Toast/Fast Show which we both enjoy. That put him off his Corianalus!

My DP does great impressions of things including the facial expressions- he's got a really expressive face. He's got a really silly side generally when he's in the mood which I love.

Also when he's hungover he's really bitchy about annoying people on TV and it cracks me up as he's not like that at all usually.

Also takes the piss out of me in a bantering way sometimes which I like.

My husband is brilliant at situational comedy and will take something mundane and have me crying with laughter.

Example 1: when we were getting to know each other online, we were talking about ghostbusters and gadgets and with reference to a pke meter, I said "quick scan me!" But it auto corrected to "scam".
With no hesitation he replied "good evening, I am a Nigerian Prince and I have been instructed to give you a millions pounds, I just need your bank details" and I spat my two all over my laptop and blew it up!

Example 2: I was driving down the street and it was a hot day. Two lads were walking along, top less. I glanced at them and thought "wow, they're extremely white" (as in, no base tan whatsoever) so I had said nothing out loud.

DH said "The beacons have been lit, Gordor calls for aid" I nearly crashed the car laughing and still laugh out loud about it, years later Grin

What makes him laugh?

SwordToFlamethrower · 05/08/2024 20:47

"Tea" not two!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 05/08/2024 20:57

He has one of these, we all fall about laughing every effing day he joins the breakfast table, and the dinner table in the evening, and then there are weddings, funerals (yes!), christenings, whist nights, beetle drives.
It's one long, long life of laughter - as I suspect you can image. 😫

Oh I'm in your situation. I'm the funny one. It would be nice but hey ho. No - he doesn't make me laugh.

UpThereForThinkingDownThereForDancing · 05/08/2024 21:05

I should probably name change for this but... Just in case... 🤣
We have gates at the end of our drive, when I go to leave in the car he'll open the gates for me, but he'll skip there in a silly way, arms and everything.
If it rains he'll sometimes strip his clothes off and dance in it in his wellies (no neighbours can see this!).
He has loads of quotes from comedy programmes and can whip one out at the perfect moment... He's had our kids watch all his fave comedy shows so they can be in on the joke, so we are often all laughing randomly at something that would make no sense to anyone who overheard.
We both work from home and sit opposite each other... Now and again I'll look up as a pair of eyes rises slowly above the computer screen to blink at me and disappear again.
He makes me laugh every day.

TaggySits · 05/08/2024 21:10

I love these, it's things like the little 'in' jokes that have developed from something random which years later still make everyone laugh!

To answer the earlier post, I make him laugh when I notice something and make a funny comment about it or say something witty about the situation.

He doesn't have a 'silly' sense of humour though, but I do!

He approaches me acting like a T rex when I’m making a cup of tea. He makes rubbish Dad jokes and makes up silly songs a lot too. Sounds daft but always makes me laugh.

singularsensation · 05/08/2024 21:16

My DH makes me laugh every day. He always recognises the absurdity of life and especially our quirky friends and neighbours. He does it with a lot of love and no malice but his impression of our friends just kills me. He also sends me funny things from the media (we both work in the industry) and we have a few long running jokes we do that no one else would find funny but we do. It's one of the best things about us.

RosesAndHellebores · 05/08/2024 21:18

I know how you feel @TaggySits. 33 years plus in and it has its compensations: he's moral, loyal, kind and very, very tidy. A giggle is quite rare.

BeachHutsAndDeckchairs · 05/08/2024 21:32

Watching silly videos and sharing daft memes. Shared sarcasm and banter between us.

T-rex behaviour would definitely make me laugh! I'm laughing now even just thinking about what that would look like!

My DH is extremely witty and makes me laugh most days.

In fact his ability to do that makes up for times he can be a complete arse.

Noises off to accompany something I am doing which makes me collapse in giggles

Pulling silly faces at me through the window when I'm trying to be serious in a work call

Telling me "not to get those two mixed up" when I had a packet of tampax and a bag of carrots on the car seat next to me

Taking the piss out of me/ribbing me in such a funny way you can't help by see the funny side and not feel insulted.

His sense of humour is the window through which his intelligence shines out.... He is not educated in the traditional sense but it's what makes him clever and hugely entertaining.

PermanentTemporary · 05/08/2024 21:49

Just plain old funny chat - he's just so much fun to talk to, alwats interested and interesting, jokes, daft facts, curent affairs, you name it. Plus he rips the piss out of himself all the time, while taking me seriously. Plus pretending to be one of the cats and speaking for them, but we both do that [pathetic cat slaves that we are]

Tbh having been married to someone who mainly spoke in comedy catchphrases, I came to hate it. But there are still just a couple I miss because they're so obscure, I'll never hear them from anyone else (absolutely brilliant lines from an early Alexei Sayle routine for eg).

It's not and could never be a deal-breaker for me, he genuinely is such a good man in so many ways, but I do miss having someone who makes me belly laugh or that I can just be giddy with at times.
