I need some positive vibes around counselling and how it can help me move on with my life (if possible)! Left ExH nearly two years ago, he wouldn't leave and was an absolute c*nt so I took off with our 2 DC and started again. Thing is I still haven't got past what he's done to our family and I'm starting to think therapy is the answer. To be fair there's a lot to unpick and I've had waves of ptsd thrown in for good measure. I'm just not 'over it' and I really want to be! Have you had therapy for a marriage breakdown? Did it help? What should I look for when finding a counsellor?

Sounds like you’re in the right place for some support through counselling atm @rockingbird It can really help with ptsd and to pick through past relationships.

Ive found therapy incredibly helpful at various times in my life.

Tips for finding a counsellor:

most counselling directories have search filters. So you can look for a therapist who specialises in the issues you want to discuss or therapists in a particular location.

For me, the most important thing was to find a therapist I felt comfortable talking to. It can be helpful to have an initial consultations with a few different therapists, to help you get a sense of who feel is a good fit for you. A good therapist will encourage you to explore this, they will want you to find someone who is a good match for you.

It’s normal to feel nervous at the beginning. This will get better in time!

Also, try to be brave with a therapist! If there’s something that’s not working for you in the sessions, or if they say something that you don’t like. Tell them! It’s really helpful feedback for them and they should help you work through whatever comes from it.

good luck! :)

Also, quite a few therapists work online now. So you might what to think about whether you’d prefer sessions in person or online (I prefer in person, it feels different somehow)

Thank you for your response @SheSlays much appreciated! In person would definitely be preferred so will bear that in mind.
