I meet a man through a family member last year we clicked straight away, what I did not know is that this man asked my relative if it was Ok to ask me out, my relative never told me this straight away they waited for a couple of months to tell me, anyway I said I was interested and to pass on my number, this relative and a friend of both my relative and this man started to sabotage us getting together, making up lies about about myself and this man to put us both of, at one point my relative told this man I did not have a mobile and would they would have to be go between it escalated to the point last year where I caught my relative and this other friend out and they admitted everything.

This man is divorced with kids and has custody, the relationship with his ex was abusive, mentally and physically and he has some scars, part of the divorce agreement was they live in the same house until it was sold, the house has now been sold and he moved out with his kids in March, another part of the divorce agreement which was what the ex wife wanted that they still go on holiday together and family meals, I think he just agreed to it at the time under stress, he has told my relative and this other friend that he thinks he can get the divorce agreement changed to take away the holidays and meals etc, I know he said that at the time of going through the divorce he thought he wouldn't meet anyone else and then he meet me. He has alot of low self esteem and confidence issues.

We never made any contact with each other, he knew when my birthday was but never did anything about it no card, nothing, we all agreed to meet up a social event but on the day this man found other things out that my relative and this other friend had been keeping from him, one of them being that I did have mobile all along. He also found out that this other friend had been sabotaging us getting together. I offered to meet this man or even speak to him over the phone and clear the air but my message was never passed on to this man.

It got to the point where things were just not getting anyway, and I made the decision to walk away from it. When this man found out, he came to see me but was upset when he saw outside and never approached me. Since December I have seen him about locally as we live near each other, our paths will cross as we are both connected to a local charity. I never approached him as he looked harassed and stressed as he was moving.

One of my relatives best friend who I am also friends with and have known for over 20 years has this man on their facebook and in April reached out to him to see where he is at if he is still interested in me, the guy said he was still interested in me and asked if I was on facebook, my friend said I was and gave him my number, and told me he was still interested in me, this guy sent me a facebook request which I accepted this was beginning of about 6th April and I havent had any communication of him either through facebook, messenger, whataspps or even a phone call or text.

My friend has said he has to make the first move but I am beginning to think what do I next. My friend has said he hasnt heard anything from this man and if he did he would tell me. Theres alot more what has gone on but I am now at a point of what to do.

One friend says he has to make the move, another one says he might be waiting for me to make the move and just send him a message and why should 2 people not be together just because other people dont like it.

Do I make a move and send him a message saying I am here when he's ready but because I know his background relationship I do not want to put any pressure on him and scare him off, plus he could be having issues the divorce, or he has changed his mind but he is still on my facebook, I dont want to come across as needy or clingy which I am not but I have to try and get on with my life.

Any advice?

I was just going to say the same. It’s a complete and utter lie.

Id run a mile OP he’s a total bullshitter still enmeshed with his ex.

Why are you indulging so many people creating drama in your life? Stop letting people shit stir and walk away from this potential shit storm.

DatingDinosaur · 19/05/2024 13:05

Sounds toxic all round. Leave well alone.

Divorce lawyer here of over 25 years experience. This is indeed complete horseshit. The court has no power to make such an order.

DrJonesIpresume · 19/05/2024 13:30

Amost everything you know about him is via this relative of yours and the mutual friend. Since they seem to have done everything they can to keep you apart so far (including telling him lies about you), I wouldn't believe a word they say about him.

He's contacted you on fb. Why not just send a quick message saying "Hi there, how are you?".

yellowsmileyface · 19/05/2024 13:34

I'm always sceptical of men who claim their exes were abusive. Of course men do also experience abuse, but pretty much all abusive men claim their exes were the abusive one, so a guy would really have to earn my trust if he made such a claim.

Considering he's definitely pulling the wool over your eyes regarding his divorce settlement, I'd be even more wary of him.

Why are your friends and family so involved in your life? Your friend reaching out to him to find out if he's still interested is seriously overstepping. I think you need to learn to enforce boundaries in all your interpersonal relationships.

Regarding this guy, though, I'd suggest leaving it. It sounds like way too much drama for what it's worth and there are too many red flags already.

happyinherts · 19/05/2024 13:36

Are you lacking something in your life? Being single forever is well worth it when this is the alternative. Gain some dignity. You're worth far more.... and always remember that.

Circumferences · 19/05/2024 13:39

This entire scenario is so much effort!

The start of a relationship should be so simple.
If it's this complicated already I'd just walk away.

I'd also be having words with myself about allowing my relatives to get so involved with my personal affairs.

maudelovesharold · 19/05/2024 13:39

It sounds like the kind of situation you should actively avoid., not be asking how to get further enmeshed. As pp keep saying, you would never have court enforced ‘family’ holidays and meals as part of a divorce settlement. Surely you must recognise how ludicrous that would be! Maybe people have been trying to ‘sabotage’ the relationship because they know what he’s really like? I would avoid these lies and dramas like the plague.

Cosmosforbreakfast · 19/05/2024 13:39

Sounds like a whole crock of shitstorm. Don't waste any time on this guy. Run. There are plenty of decent men out there without all these complications. You can do better than this.

InheritedClock · 19/05/2024 13:42

OP, quite apart from the obviously fictitious divorce agreement involving family holidays, surely you can see how mad this all is? Even leaving aside the frankly insane number of other people involved in passing on or failing to pass on messages/ rumours/ attempting sabotage etc, this man apparently arrived at your house, got upset by something outside (?) and left again without seeing you, he skipped a social event you were supposed to be at, plus you’ve passed one another innumerable times on the street without speaking. For whatever reason, neither of the two adults involved have been able to contact one another, even once, far less go on an actual date. This is dead in the water.

SherlockHomies · 19/05/2024 13:51

The 'divorce agreement' 🤣🤣

Seriously though, what a load of drama.

No man or woman is worth this sort of over-complicated strangeness.

Forget and move on.

Thistooshallpass. · 19/05/2024 13:51

One word . No .
There must be other men who come without this level of baggage and downright ridiculous untruths.

PoppingTomorrow · 19/05/2024 13:53

Never chase a man when there's so much drama and complication/justification before you've even been on a date.

He's just as capable of asking you out as you are him.

Pinkbonbon · 19/05/2024 14:01

Are you all 14?

Listen, notmal adults talk to eachother they don't use go-betweens. He's still with his wife. Don't be a moron.

He's already trying to seperate you from your friends by telling you they didn't pass on messages.. Either that or they are trying to keep you away from the psycho.

He's likely the abusive one.

Come the fuck on op. Is his dick made of gold or something? Even if all this shit was true about the divorce and the weird arrangement, why would you get involved with someone who's life is so dramatic?

I think you are desperate, unfortunately.

You need to stay totally single for now and work whatever going on with you that would make you consider this guy through in therapy. Spend at least a year reading up on how to spot red flags of narcissistic abusers too. You're clearly vulnerable right now. It's not time for you to be dating anyone.

TorturedPoets · 19/05/2024 14:08

What a complete and utter mess, the whole thing - him, the wife, the relatives (wtf,) the divorce ‘agreement’. Just ridiculous, even if half true.

Aquamarine1029 · 19/05/2024 14:12

What kind of circus are you living in? Your entire post is complete batshittery.

Avoid this man like the plague, tell your relatives to fuck off, and move out of the area immediately. Do whatever it takes to get away from this madhouse.

Olivia2495 · 19/05/2024 14:29

Not much has been said about your relative. They sound weird, controlling and abusive. Are they normally this involved in your life? If so why? Why can’t you tell them to fuck off?

You need to tell this relative to stay out of your business. None of this is normal.

supercali77 · 19/05/2024 15:30

So, you've met once, he's never texted you and you've never texted him and all you've heard is through 2 other people? And apparently he has to take his ex wife out for meals after their divorce?

What is this nonsense!? Do literally anything else other than ruminating over this situation and man

Left · 19/05/2024 17:46

So you’ve never had direct communication with this man after first meeting? Everything about this is so convoluted and strange. Way too intense a situation for someone you met once last year and haven’t spoken to since.

Just forget about this one and find a healthier situation where your relative doesn’t insert themselves into the middle of the situation.

Saratoga212 · 19/05/2024 18:29

There is no way a court would ever make the ex spouses going out for meals and taking holidays together a condition of a divorce agreement.

YouAreAStrongLady · 19/05/2024 18:30

he has told my relative and this other friend that he thinks he can get
the divorce agreement changed to take away the holidays and meals etc,

I doubt it op, this kind of agreement is usually iron clad in divorces.

😂😂😂

Wooloohooloo · 19/05/2024 20:56

This is bonkers OP 🤣 You, him, the many relatives/friends who are bizarrely involved.
