Has anyone ever had their post natal depression transfer to a different child?

DarcyHargrove · 11/04/2024 17:27

I spent my whole second pregnancy worrying that wouldn’t be able to love my baby because I couldn’t imagine loving anything as much as my first child. I know this is a normal worry and that your heart expands for both.

But I feel like my heart didn’t expand and instead of not liking my baby, I transferred all my love quota to him and now I don’t like my eldest. I love her, I know I do because I feel heart broken about it but I just don’t like her. I don’t enjoy spending time with her, I have zero patience for her. I don’t miss her when she’s not here. I wish I could run away with the youngest and it just be and him. He’s nearly 3 now and things haven’t changed. I don’t know what to do because I don’t want to feel like this. Me and my daughter used to be best friends.

Op hasn't suggested for a moment that her daughter is the problem though. She even says she used to be her best friend. She hasn't mentioned behavioural issues or anything leading to these feelings. So arguably, yes, something is wrong with you if you don't like one of your own kids, for no other reason than the fact they were born first and you had a nice shiny new replacement.

It's mad that if this was a post about somebody loving their new puppy and losing interest in their old dog they would be torn a new one but because being a mother is treated as some special characteristic she must be a saint and struggling in some way.

I don't have any answers. I don't like kids and even I feel sorry for the oldest. She literally says she wants to leave with the 3 year old and is happy when her 10 year old isn't there. There is only so much kidding yourself you can do. That isn't love. It's guilt, and shame of what other people would think, social obligations, that is keeping the child parent relationship going. It's not love at all.

I have no idea what anybody thinks the gp will do either. They can't make you love or even like somebody. The idea they can fix this is frankly ludicrous.

GP can prescribe medication that has efficacy and an evidence base eg works
IAPT and talking therapy have an evidence base and they work too
GP is a medical doctor who has specialised in community health with postgrad training. Low mood is a very common presentation.

DarcyHargrove · 11/04/2024 19:42

I already take medication etc. Had years of very bad mental health care from the nhs but have self referred to the iapt to try again.

OP posts:
Starsandflowers · 11/04/2024 19:42

Could you perhaps be putting too much stock in your own thoughts?
It's very natural to feel extremely close to your baby as its instinctual that they are the most fragile so need more attention. Has this translated in your mind to meaning you feel less for your eldest? As kids age they naturally become less connected to you... this does not mean you don't like or love them... it doesn't mean you like or love the younger child more. They are just at different stages so provoke different responses in you.
Its also possible you find parenting babies and toddlers easier than parenting a 10yo... again this does not mean you don't like or love the 10yo.
The way you feel about your children will change hundreds of times. One month they'll annoy the living daylights out of you, the next they'll light your life with joy. Don't over read into it. They are developing as people. You still love them the whole way thru. You don't need to be on cloud nine all the time for that to be true. And feeling more positively towards one at one stage does not mean you prefer them overall or love them more than the other.
As they both age you'll find you bond with them in different ways as they are different people.
The connection and responsibility you feel to a 3yo is very different to a 10yo.

OP (and hatemyself1, too), I'm glad you both posted, because I'm with those who think this is serious and needs urgent attention. I had my third child when my older two were 10 and 8. Of course it's normal to be practically closer, day to day, to the younger one who needs you so much more. But to actually dislike the older one(s) - no, I really don't think that's normal. I love them just as much - our closeness expresses itself in different ways. My lot are 18, 16 and 8 now and I can tell you that 10/11 is still very much a child - still very little indeed and she will need you and be feeling the change in your attitude to her. You're right that this has the potential to do a lot of damage, but there is always, always a chance to turn it around, with reflecton, hard work on yourself and willingness to put her first (I don't mean above your younger child, but alongside your younger child and above your own feelings). I think you need proper, searching therapy (go private at all possible), not a few sessions of NHS CBT.

Hatemyself1, can you see how you are replicating the pattern your mother set for you in this situation, which I am sure would have been quite distressing for you as a child?

calligraphee · 12/04/2024 06:41

You're not listening to the OP @Pinkbonbon

calligraphee · 12/04/2024 06:46

hatemyself1 · 11/04/2024 19:31

OP, I feel exactly the same. Toddler child 3 and older child 13. We used to be so close but I really don't like her very much since the youngest was born. I have to fight my feelings hard and the only thing that works for us is to organise regular 1-1 time. I hate the idea but I quite like her when baby isn't around. God, I hate myself for writing this but wanted you to know you're not alone. There's also a big age gap between me and my brother and I remember my mum withdrawing from me when he was born. I think it's more common than people are able to admit. Hugs to you

In this situation I'd suggest counselling as it looks like you are repeating an unhealthy pattern from your childhood.

Zone2NorthLondon · 12/04/2024 11:08

@DarcyHargrove do contact GP for a consultation and support.NHS options are overall good and free. IAPT can be the initial start if they feel you require further treatment they’ll recommend that and make a referral for additional support

You do seem low and have alluded to existing mental health issues, sorry to read you’ve had You can also self-refer to your local IAPT service – see here to find it. IAPT
