Easter gifts

When did an Easter egg turn into Easter 'gifts'?

When I was young I'd get an Easter egg if I was lucky (I am old) but nowadays kids get gifts/money too? Why, just why??

I'm waiting to see all the (very expensive) 'gifts' my DGS has been given by my DDs in laws.

I’m rarely shocked on here and I knew some people bought a new outfit but a new phone / new iPad etc? Wow

I learned yesterday they do Easter baskets in America full of gifts? I suppose that will end up her eventually.

It already is!

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 01/04/2024 16:39

I don't know anyone who does Easter gifts that are not Easter eggs or flowers for the person cooking the roast

That's been here since at least the mid nineties

Occasionally I’ve given dgc a book token each instead of chocolate as they get so many chocolate eggs. Or if I’ve completely forgotten I just hand them a fiver each. 🤷‍♀️ Don’t buy any other Easter gifts, Easter’s nit something I’ve ever celebrated.

AnotherWeirdBarbie · 01/04/2024 19:40

It was quite the leap by the OP and other posters to go on the attack but they’ve only embarrassed themselves.

🤣 They have.

It sounds like you have good reasons for what you give, not that you need them. There is always some idiot ready to judge.

We also have an autistic child so spread gift giving throughout the year due to it being overwhelming for them. Definitely with you on the difficulty buying clothes too. 😞

Judgey pants are always going to judge. 🤣

i am another who really couldnt care less. i am a christian and go to church regularly so easter for me is about more than a chocolate egg.

i did buy all the kids and DH one, and he in turn bought me one.. for the newborn grandson i spend the amount of money i would spend on an egg, on a little outfit for him.....thats it.. no expectation for gifts and i wont be doing gifts.

it baffles me now, every single event has to comprise of a gift.. why??

AnotherWeirdBarbie · 01/04/2024 19:55

Because people want to buy them.

I find it baffling that anyone can believe in God, but each to their own. 😊

Breakingpoint1961 · 01/04/2024 21:45

@AnotherWeirdBarbie may I ask who was on the attack? I certainly wasn't, and I can't see any other posters attacking? The only feathers that seem to be ruffled are the posters justifying their gifts..

Oh and I'm not in the least embarrassed so don't you be worrying yourself about that😉

i think @AnotherWeirdBarbie was replying to me.... everyeone is entitled too their opinion

PaintedEgg · 01/04/2024 22:01

@Breakingpoint1961 You have started a thread wondering why people buy gifts and now seem to think people replying are justifying their purchases

the bottom line is people buy gifts because they want and they can - you don't have to do it

there are a lot of children who are also getting gifts without any occasion at all - it would baffle me that someone is bothered about it...

Breakingpoint1961 · 01/04/2024 22:03

@PaintedEgg I think you'll find actually listing said gifts rather than "yes I buy gifts" are two very different things..

I'm baffled you can't see that..

@queenofcruises you are right..everyone is entitled to their opinion, I'm asking where were the 'attackers' because I don't actually see any?

I bought my grand daughter a teddy and outfit, she's 6 months so doesn't eat chocolate. I would usually do hampers for my adult kids and 14 year old, but we've always been left with tons of eggs for weeks after. So this year they got a large and medium one and my 14 year old got a lego set.

tomorrowisanotherdate · 01/04/2024 22:06

A small gift of food is what I give and recieve at Easter - I had a lovely jar of posh olives, and some nice jars of spice, as I asked not to be given sweets. I gave chocolate, but not a lot of eggs, as other chocolate is better value for money.

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 01/04/2024 22:06

Just more plastic tat. The Easter decor, cushions, throws, wreaths 🤣🤣bloody awful.

DelurkingAJ · 01/04/2024 22:14

DGM would buy DM a new outfit for Easter in the 1950s. DGM was, however, Scandinavian American so there may be a tradition there that never translated to the UK. DM did therefore also buy us each a new outfit, even though there was not the ‘for church on Easter Sunday’ reasoning I’m told DGM used.

EricHebbornInItaly · 01/04/2024 23:16

I’m Christian, I went to Church with my daughter yesterday and then when we got home I gave her an Easter basket with two toy bunnies and a second hand toy Noah’s ark. (Bought off vinted for a total of £8). When she’s older it will be stickers, books, inexpensive fun bits.

Easter is a very special holiday for me, as is Christmas. I have decorations up, a decorated table with a butter lamb, painted eggs etc, and now I have a child, I buy her gifts the same way my mother did for me.

My family don’t give chocolate it would be seen as an over indulgence to my mother 😅, we had decorated boiled eggs. (And loved them too).

people were simply explaining their gift-giving attitudes, there is a bit of a difference between a set of PJs and new iPhone

EricHebbornInItaly · 01/04/2024 23:19

@RickyGervaislovesdogs doesn’t need to be plastic though, mine are all paper or painted home made eggs etc. (however I know there is loads of plastic decorations for all holidays now unfortunately).

Retro12 · 02/04/2024 11:35

It all boils down to choice... You choose to give an egg, others choose to gift! There are no rules, just choices.

I expect your DSG will show you his expensive gifts as he is excited about them!
