Newcastle to London, distance is it too far

Is it logistically too far to start a relationship with someone who lives in London if you’re based in Newcastle- can this work? Thoughts people?

I don't think it could work, unless one of you are planning on relocating shortly. Wouldn't be for me anyway.

I wouldn’t want to. You can’t get to know somebody properly when you’re only seeing them the odd weekend, you only ever get them on their best behaviour; and seeing them any more than that is going to mean that other important aspects of your life like friendships and hobbies get sidelined.

How affluent are you both? Could you both afford to travel? Could you travel regular?
Do you both get the same days off?
Could you work from home and work on a Monday or Friday in London or them Newcastle to maximise time together?

My husband lived up north and I lived in London when we first got together. We saw each other almost every weekend, and as a PP suggested we extended the weekends by working from home at the other's place where we could(pre-covid) We did that for over a year. He eventually moved to London.

So for me, yes it can work and I think you get to know someone quicker by spending extended periods of time with them. You also become committed quicker I think. But I think one of both of you has to be open to the idea of relocating eventually.

Dh and I were on opposite sides of the world from 6 months into meeting (11 hour flight). It was expensive and upsetting when we had to say goodbye and knew it would be a couple months til we saw each other again, but it was fine. We knew it was an unavoidable delay to starting life together (due to immigration reasons, not choice), but that it was temporary.

Newcastle to London is my commute to the office. 😂 I don’t think it’s too far as long as one or both of you could conceivably consider moving so you could live together eventually.

It's fine. If you gets serious you can rethink the location.

It's a direct train and only three hours. Both places are fun.

I started a relationship with someone in London when I lived in Manchester.

We've been together ( in the same city ) 15 years. Moved in after 6 months.

It worked but only because we were both willing to move to the other's city relatively early on, no kids, portable jobs, up for a bit of an adventure.

Otherwise it would not have worked.
