You're too pretty to be on your own

Urrgghh what does this mean? I'm happy being single thank you very much.

Then a friend "when you're in bed don't you just wish someone was there with you?" Er no. Why? To hog the duvet, snore, wriggle about and touch my bum no thank you.

Why are people so nosey?

“You're too pretty to be on your own”

“You make it sound as if this isn’t my preferred choice.”

GreyCarpet · 31/03/2024 20:36

Because so many people still believe that a woman can't be happy on her own and we're all just sitting there on that shelf waiting for a man to choose us.

I had similar when I was single.

"Why are you single? You're too pretty to be single."

"Because I haven't met a man who was worth giving up being single for."

"If I was single, I'd ask you out."

"And I'd turn you down."

"But you're too pretty to be single."

"You're missing the part where its my choice."

yup, been there. It’s just so insulting isn’t it and pathetic on their part.

This. These sorts of comments are drenched in misogyny. When I was single and would get such comments, my eyes would glaze over. So dull.

DirectionToPerfection · 31/03/2024 20:47

Yeah this one is infuriating.

I heard a variation of it at a wedding recently "OMG how are you still single?"

Because she wants to be!

I'm sure the person who said it thought she was being complimentary as this woman is a stunner, but bloody hell she was so clueless and it was just uncomfortable all round.

Ha I was alone with three small kids and used to have a weekly veg delivery from a local farm. I’d exchange pleasantries with the delivery guy, who was probably fifteen years younger and like a gnomey Worzel Gummidge.
Then on one occasion he arrived at the door and lingered for a chat. It became clear he’d misinterpreted my chats about radishes as a big come on, and felt that my life as a lonely woman would be hugely improved if we were to date , as he could see I was ‘lonely’ in my ‘big house’ .LOL. And I was ‘too beautiful’ to be so lonely and single . The way he said it was so presumptuous and charitable , as if I’d be so grateful because well, with three babies who else could I get ?😂

MissLucyx · 31/03/2024 21:06

Yeah it’s pretty rude and passive aggressive

BatshitCrazyWoman · 31/03/2024 21:17

I feel your pain, OP. I also had "what idiot divorced you?" 😡 My reply : I divorced him, because he was an arse, actually.

Welcome to the modern world, where women can divorce adulterers, abusers and arseholes. Used to really wind me up!

RedRobyn2021 · 31/03/2024 21:18

Why do people perpetuate this belief that it is better to pick up after a man than be single?

Honestly OP it says more about them trying to validate their own choices to themselves, ignore it

mondaytosunday · 31/03/2024 21:37

I'm a widow and a friend's husband just couldn't accept that I was happy on my own. I was in my 40s with two small kids. Every time he would ask if I was putting myself 'out there'. I said I'm not opposed to it but not actively doing anything about it. He would then go on about how I should be dating etc etc. As if guys were lining up to date a late 40s woman with two kids under 7! Now I'm over 60 he's stopped mentioning.

It implies women are impassive pawns in men's relationships. How can you be single when surely some man must want you? Fuck off.

RandomUsernameHere · 31/03/2024 21:45

It sounds like a really bad chat up line

Starseeking · 31/03/2024 21:50

My date this evening asked if I've been single for almost 3 years because "I'm picky"...I replied "Of course I am, if I'm going to have a partner, I don't want to spend the rest of my life with any random I pull in off the street" 😳🙄😳

But also that the only reason a man would want you was because you were pretty. Who cares about your personality!

DatingDinosaur · 31/03/2024 22:08

If a man said this to me I'd instantly think he was the biggest player ever with his smooth talking crap.

If a friend said it to me I'd know it was coming from a caring but misguided place.

If anyone else said it to me I'd probably just smile one of those smiles that says 'you don't know jack shit about my life' Wink
