First time poster, but I could really do with some advice.

My 84 (and a half!) year-old mother has recently got it into her head that she wants a motor scooter. I don't mean a mobility scooter, we're talking a full on Mods n Rockers Lambretta kind of thing here. She used to own one when she was in her early 20s and has happy memories of riding it around. She hasn't ridden a motorcycle of any kind since then and has had numerous bumps and scrapes in her car - more since she went completely blind in one eye a few years back. So I'm worried she's going to end up killing/injuring herself and/or someone else.

I've voiced my concerns to her but she's undeterred and has emailed me a photo of the one she's intending to buy online. So she's not even going to be trying it out first! My DH suggested she goes on a training course before getting one, but she's extremely introverted and hates having anything to do with other people. I've offered to take her to a motorcycle dealers so she can at least take one for a test drive, but she's not up for that either.

So I'm thinking I might just have to resign myself to possibly receiving a phone call from the hospital/police one day telling me she's hurt herself or worse. WWYD?

Is her vision good enough to be driving her car let alone the dreamed of Lambretta?

She should only have been driving at all after medical checks to make sure she can judge distances and has a wide enough visual field. My DH has effectively only vision in one eye and is banned from driving as the remaining vision isn't good enough.

Yes, she has driving license for a car, which would cover a motor scooter.

You can still report her to the DMV

Do they know about her sight issues?

When did she last go to an optician?

Did she pass her motorcycle test back in the day (which would then have allowed her to ride over 250cc bikes)?
I expect she may have just had L plates and a scooter as they were under 250cc or just ridden a moped on a car licence. If no motorcycle licence then she will HAVE to do a CBT course.

Not if the motorcycle is actually a moped (under 50cc) and she passed her car test before Feb 2001.

Thanks so much for all your replies.

She's had a vision test to check if she's still okay to drive, and was passed - which I find amazing because I've seen her collide with people in the supermarket when she hasn't seen them at her side, and she often doesn't know I'm standing next to her (she's getting quite deaf as well, but won't admit that either).

I suggested an electric bike, but she said she wants to be able to keep up with the traffic.

I think I need to check out the driving license requirements and find out what cc the scooter she's intending to get is.
