Heartbroken about my dog

hi guys pls be kind on this post as I’m really stressed right now . I’ve had social services involved with me and my kids due to my dad fighting with my partner outside my home and police having to get called . I’ve had 2 different social workers had no problem with them whatsoever they didn’t have a problem with my dog until I’ve now had a new social worker. She is scared of large breed dogs and said to me I should’ve gotten a smaller dog and saying I need to rehome my dog as the dog smells but other social workers have not had a problem whatsoever and said my dog is completely fine as they’ve had dogs themselves .

so there I am panicking I’ve just rehomed my dog to somebody and I am so so so heartbroken and I can’t stop crying we all loved her she was our family dog and my emotional support everything in one . My dog wouldn’t stop crying as she was leaving & couldn’t look at me . Is it silly if I asked the person who took her if she could keep my dog just until social are out of my life which should be in a few months time , she’s already said I could visit my dog soon whenever I wanted too see her but I don’t know if asking that is taking the p$ss? I don’t know anymore 😭

What breed of dog is it?

She is crossed with many breeds she’s a American bulldog x chihuahua x American staff x French bulldog I know this as she’s had a dna test

Have you got two threads on this? The DNA test seems an odd mix.

Can you get her back?

newyear2024 · 12/03/2024 10:32

What would the consequences have been if you hadn't rehomed the dog, did she say? Was the dog just smelly? Because I'm pretty sure small dogs can be smelly as well, I know my shih tzu certainly can be. Was the dog boisterous/jumping all over the place or is he/she a well behaved dog?

I am the first to agree that large bully type dogs are not suited to homes with small children, but her reasoning of it being because the dog is smelly doesn't sound like a legitimate reason she could force you to rehome the dog. Now had the dog been untrained, barking and jumping all over the place knocking down things and knocking over people it might be different.

Livelifelaughter · 12/03/2024 10:36

Get your dog back, just say you have made a mistake. This is ridiculous, you are going through a lot and it's making your life harder. It really annoys me when people don't like dogs and then use their position of authority to make their own life "better" . Good luck OP

FOJN · 12/03/2024 10:54

Unless the social worker has evidence that the dog is a danger to the children then I don't think he/she has the authority to instruct you to re-home the dog.

The dogs size and smell is irrelevant.

ijustneedtokeepbreathing · 12/03/2024 11:04

I agree with the previous poster who said the size and smell of the dog is irrelevant, as long as there is no evidence of risk

Get your dog back.

Seaoftroubles · 12/03/2024 11:14

If she looks like a bull breed that probably made the social worker extra vigilant. Being smelly is obviously no excuse for making you rehome her though.

Opentooffers · 12/03/2024 11:20

How the heck did chihuahua get in there? Has that made it more medium- sized, or are we still talking big?🤔

I know exactly what I thought hahah and I wouldn’t say she is a large dog she’s in between like a medium sized and large if that makes sense

A social worker surely doesn't have the power to make you get rid of your dog? Get your dog back and give her a bath or take her to the groomers. As long as your dog isn't one of the banned breeds or viscous, what the heck business is it of the social worker? Just put the dog outside when this particular social worker visits. We once had a doctor visit the house who wouldn't come in until my soft and gentle lab was put outside. Looking back I wish I'd put the doctor outside instead (but that's another story). Go get your dog back now!

Get your dog back.

IvorTheEngineDriver · 12/03/2024 12:25

Get her back. The woman's from Social Services not the RSPCA!

Thistlelass · 12/03/2024 23:36

Go above her head and try to clarify the issues re your dog with her Senior. Unless the dog is compromising your care of your children in some significant way then I see no reason not to keep her. I was once bitten on the arm by a Rottweiler in the course of doing my work. The family were warned to keep it out of my way but they never did.

Scrollbreadroll · 14/03/2024 02:50

@Nalalove1 There has got to be more to this story. There’s no way a social worker would say you need to rehome your dog because it’s smelly? And plenty of families have larger dogs. And then on the flip side, if there’s no other valid reason to rehome your god, why on earth have you?

Zanatdy · 14/03/2024 06:42

Ask for the dog back. A social worker being scared of dogs is tough.
