My husband and I have been married for 6 years with one child, who is almost 4.

On Friday while at work i got a panicked call from him telling me that he had gone to the doctors as thought he had a uti. They did a sample and he said they sent it off to the local sti clinic and it's come back he has a urine infection called NSU????

I had to call the clinic as I needed antibiotics too as precaution and the nurse was all but implying it's not a urine infection and it is as a result of an STD. I know that I don't have one, so now I'm almost adamant he's played away. I don't work in the health field but a GP wouldn't send a urine sample off to sexual health clinic would they? He's gone there himself hasn't he...

Yup! He's played away.
I had a BF pass an NSU onto me, it's not a regular urine infection, I had to visit an std clinic.

Some sexual health service offer a drop off service where you leave a sample and fill in a form they provide then you send off and they contact you via whatever method you specified with results and recommendation on treatment if appropriate and where to go next. They will, as standard recommend you contact sexual partners.
I used to work in a family planning and GUM clinic and this is a service we offered

NSU | Terrence Higgins Trust

Sexual health information for men about non-specific urethritis, NSU symptoms, how it’s passed on and how it’s treated.

Sorry but yes it's an STI.
I used to work on the female side of a sexual health clinic.
The GP would NOT have sent any samples.
They might have suggested he goes there due to his symptoms.
Pls don't let him tell you it 'can' be caught off a loo seat 😩.

My ex husband had to go to the sexual health clinic to get tested after he got pricked with a syringe in work (and yes I do know that's what really happened because I had to collect him from work when it happened!). It was the only place that did particular tests.

Is NSU always an STI?

Several organisms can cause NSU but, in many cases, the specific organism can't be identified. The infection can easily be caught through vaginal sex. It can also be acquired through anal or oral sex, although this is less common. NSU can sometimes occur without being sexually transmitted.

Moier · 11/03/2024 15:17

Also if he's not very good at being clean.. e coli via faeces can get into the urethra and cause an NSU..but this is more common in women with the vagina being nearer to the anus.
The test will beable to tell what exactly caused his NSU.

Avastmehearties · 11/03/2024 15:29

Less common but there are definitely non sexual causes- prostatis and structural stuff like phimosis and urethral strictures which make infection more likely. It can also be caused by mechanical damage or allergic reactions. It just means inflammation of the urethra.

The sexual health clinic would probably be the place to test either way as they'd be the ones set up for it. As a PP mentions, I see plenty of needle stick or human bite victims there also some cervical smear patients so it isn't strictly just sexual health.

It can be caused by all sorts including Chlamydia and gonhorroea. Not saying STI isn't a likely cause, just for perspective as it isn't the only one.

Please do get a full screening though to be safe xx

CherryRipe1 · 11/03/2024 15:32

My GP practice does test women for sti's so maybe he did get tested at his GP?
I've heard of Chlamydia and other sti's causing nsu but also that Chlamydia can lay dormant for years? Please correct me if I'm wrong. I hope he's not been cheating & you get some answers.

MessyHouseMe · 23/05/2024 21:25

Just for clarity on NSU, they aren't necessarily STIs and can be caused by non sexual factors like overly vigorous sex or a reaction to latex, deodorant etc.

WrylyAmused · 23/05/2024 22:09

NSU stands for non-specific urethritis - i.e. an inflammation of the urethra where they don't know the cause.

Specifically, it's not caused by gonorrhoea or chlamydia, so at least there's that.

The test result might be able to tell you the bacterium that caused it, but it depends whether that's been tested for - it might be negative for all types tested for, and hence the "non-specific" label.

It can be sexually transmitted, but not necessarily so, so it doesn't prove anything about whether he's cheated or not.
