Elderly/older parents filling in for lazy fathers?

I have two friends who both have very young children who have uninvolved/lazy fathers.

I'm shocked that it's their parents (usually their mothers) who are doing the other half of rearing the children whilst dad goes to the pub with his mates every sunday or stays at home playing computer games.

My husband seems to think that this is the norm and that I am the one with the odd circumstances as my own parents are quite uninvolved themselves. My husband is a very involved father but I sensed a mild tone of resentment which I've never experienced from him before. He would of course deny that he felt resentful in any way! I wondered what everyone's take on this is? It has bothered me a little because if this is the case, it seems that some fathers are perhaps exploiting the goodwill of their inlaws, or is it that inlaws are stepping on the toes of fathers?
