Weird things you do (or the household does) - that others might think is odd

I was reading the ‘what’s the weird thing your in-laws do thread’ and loved some of the answers including the whimsical one where they kept an emergency kite in the car – just in case there was the perfect gust of wind.

However, the thread did make me think about the routines we build.

As a household we do quite a few of the things that crop up in the in-law thread (set day for shopping/eating early/bed early/a set cuppa time/night time set up & clear down) However, we have good reasons for everyone of these. For example, DH gets indigestion if we eat late/we are horrible people if we don’t have 8 solid hrs/1600 we are home from work and its transition ritual to have a natter about our day over a cuppa…. And so on.

I realised we have experimented and worked out what fits for us over a long long time together but I can see that outsiders might consider it inflexible especially as my friend was highly amused that we re-purchased the exact same shoes/hikers and tops as previously because they were comfortable and lasted really well (and we admitted we did it for quite a few products/clothing very regularly!)

So I’m just checking in to see if other people have some almost ‘non-negotiable’ routines or regular purchases that they will not be swayed from? Also to ask….. when does it go from being a well thought out preference to suddenly being ‘set in your ways’

Nope, I lead a totally radom life - no set days or times for anything. I could probably do with some routine - maybe walking the dog is one I stick to -but seeing as I have always worked shifts it's all done as and when really. That probably makes me the unusual one tbf.

At 10pm our ddog instigates bedtime. We along with it every night.. Ssh but don't tell her we sneakily watch TV in bed after that.

@Windymcwindyson Our dog was a Drill Sergeant in a previous life. He absolutely loses his shit if things are not done to the exact standard and the same time. He has no patience at all. Breakfast/dinner/walks - same time or there is chaos.

We didn't make him this way, we have always had fairly fluid daily routines but he HATES it. He likes a predictable, on time day with no deviations.

I meet my DH for coffee after work most days.
Costs a fortune, I've nice coffee and a machine at home yet we continue to do this.

So, by the replies - just having the routines themselves is unusual?

Ive been buying the same red wine for over 8 years which was recommended on saturday kitchen when james martin was on as its a good price and often on offer and i havent found another i like as much (Porta 6 from Portugal). Very gluggable and goes with everything as far as i am concerned - except when i want a new zealand sauvignon blanc 🥂🥂

Separate all waste food into different containers. Some cats eat, some pony eats. Some one goats eat but not the same as other goats and not some peelings, some composting only as none eat or are dangerous for them. Some chickens eat but not in the meat chain. It goes on and visitors find in hilarious.

ClareBlue · 02/02/2024 15:33

Especially different food for different goats. Despite their rep, they can be fussy eaters and have very individual likes and dislikes.

I wash towels and bedding on certain days so o know where I’m at with it.

I have to have set routines or the wheels fall off and everything goes wrong/stuff gets forgotten etc. But they can change over time if they need to. I like shopping on a set day each week then I don't have to worry about it - and I meal plan because I hate food waste and I make bad/unhealthy decisions when hungry!

Our dog when i was growing up used to do that. At 11pm he would start barking until you turned the lights off and went to bed!

Windymcwindyson · 02/02/2024 20:38

I have inadvertently trained my ddogs to know what the fridge opening means. Goat's milk distribution time.

loads of routines here.
Not set in stone, but yes we do them.
We both work from home, so the routines help us work round each other.

Dog also likes them (the funny thing is, he knows dh will take him out every evening. I don't - I give him a LOONG walk in the morning - so when dh is away, he doens't ask for a walk. When dh is home, he pesters until dh takes him out)

dd2 is on the spectrum, and I think dh is too, they find routines comforting.

But many of them fit around school times etc.

Plucking my chin hairs - the coarser the better.

Random Facebook reunion videos - military families, better still lost dogs.

Laundry - sorting it , Aga drying and ironing it, THE DIVINE SMELL. 😍

Wet dog smell , wish I could bottle it

The first leg shave of the summer , from wolverine to virgin bride in mins. Steady hand required obviously as the risk of drawing blood is real.
