Odds of being noticed on here by family/friends?

Aa you can tell, I have been very worried.

Has anyone here ever posted about a difficulty, then someone they know, friend or family has identified them through reading the thread?

A friend of mine spotted a thread and identified me. I wasn't bothered but may have been if it were a different friend

TheFormidableMrsC · 28/12/2023 23:06

Yes I was identified here by somebody who told my husband and OW. They then proceeded to print out 3000 posts on 3 separate threads that had brought me endless comfort and support and reported me to the police for harassment and the county court for "perjury". Grow up 🙄

AndThatWasNY · 28/12/2023 23:09

I have recognised ay least 3 people that, I know in RL.

dooneyousmugelf · 28/12/2023 23:17

If this ever comes up, I'd just deny deny deny so long as I'd posted any photos

Soldaret · 28/12/2023 23:37

Yes happened to me after the DM ran a story about my post - I denied it but was mortified. It was quite specific. Now I NC alot and change a fe details.

I’ve spotted two people I know IRL. One was my SIL - unfortunately I now know some really private stuff about her gynae issues (and also that she had a boob job!)

Second was a bit strange. A close friend was posting quite a bit, but actually wrote some stuff that wasn’t true bit that she wanted to be. There was a degree of fantasy about the whole thing - I didn’t have the heart to tell her IRL.

OlgaRhythm · 28/12/2023 23:56

I recognised a family member on here. Gave me a giggle as they sounded as much of a try-hard pretentious snob as they are in real life...

nildesparandum · 28/12/2023 23:56

I was recognised on here which resulted in very upsetting circumstances which are still ongoing.
I have since NC of course.Obviousy I cannot give any details but it taught me to be very very careful.

faerie1 · 29/12/2023 00:12

I was recognised on here, bit of a hoo hah with a post about in laws, I stayed away from here for a while but am back with a new username.

Inkypot · 29/12/2023 00:15

I name change lots to avoid this and try to avoid anything particularly outing. I haven't been recognised on here (afaik) but I did get recognised on a different online anonymous forum years ago. I posted something more specific than I realised and it got thrown back at me by someone who assumed it was about them- the thing is it wasn't actually about that person but it still taught me I needed to be more careful.

Indifferentchickenwings · 29/12/2023 00:17

Never been spotted here and regularly change username

but you are right
someone in RL and - daily mail threads are both risks

I've never recognised anybody, but I would secretly love to.

I name change frequently, and always change details of DS/DD and ages etc, but I get worried that someone will pull me up on it and say that I'm drip feeding or lying because in a diff post I had 2 DS, not 2 DD! I just do it to keep vague not for any other reason.

I do this too and think someone will pull me up one day too! Smile

Indifferentchickenwings · 29/12/2023 00:20

I love how many people have been spotted and yet - you are still here 😂

good for you ! I’m not being sarcastic

Whatsthestorynow · 29/12/2023 00:24

I’ve never recognised anyone on here or been recognised (that I know of). Most people I know don’t seem to use mumsnet like I do, they only seem to find specific search results via Google. In fact when I told a friend I was addicted to mumsnet she was completely baffled asking how anyone could possibly engage with it that much. So I have the impression that most people I know don’t use it much!
