we have three childen together, but haven't lived together for 7 years. our youngest dd is 3. He lives a nomadic lifestyle that suits him and in lots of ways is a very kind and connected man. the problem is he isnt very connected to me.
He has said that he doesnt want a conventional relationship, although he tells me he loves me and is very loving when he has a drink, which is often. I adore him and my eldest 2 adore him too. Our youngest is wary of him. As it stands, we see each other at weekends, i go and stay at his when he has the kids and we often sleep together. Our sex life is fairly good and we have good conversation and it's nice, certainly for me, and i think, for both of us. The difficulty is he has said he finds commitment very difficult, and, although he is not sleeping around as far as i am aware, he has made it fairly clear that he would like to find someone more mature and better suited to him than i am. I am 10 years his junior. I too am a bit of a loner and probably have my own commitment issues, but i wish we could live together, and have a more conventional relationship. He has had a difficult upbringing without much love from either parent. he honestly is a really nice man. I do most of the child rearing. When i was pregnant with our youngest we had an argument and split up - he had a relationship with another women for 6 months (our baby was about 6 months old). In lots of ways that broke me - i just couldn't imagine moving on. I wasn't clingy during that period and stayed pretty strong, focusing on the kids. The other woman actually helped him through his drinking and mental health problems and she was nice. I tried to Tinder date, and although i could have slept with a few guys i didn't want to, because i really really like this man. he says sometimes he has strong feelings for me and at other times he has very little feelings towards me. because of this i have learnt over the years to emotionally disconnect from him, i am very aware that i cannot let myself by hurt in the same ways that i have been hurt in the past because I have three children who rely on me and i need to provide them with stability and love. i need to be there for them because they are the ones that are there for me and have got me through the many hard times in my life.
This post sounds unhinged and like im a thicko. I promise that IRL i'm not. I live on my own day to day and like it most of the time, although im a bit lonely. I have a job i love although it pays very little and I rely on UC top ups. I love working and being useful to others, and i read and and dance around the kitchen with my gorgeous kids at night. I have no family where i live, but i like my own company. AIBU to stay in this relationship? Or should i accept that cultural norms dont apply to us all and let him see other women (maybe even try and see other men?) I dont want to play games, only do what my heart tells me. can anyone help?
