What are your relationship goals?

Do you have relationship goals? And if so, what are they?

Background is, I was talking to a friend about commitment and she said having shared relationship goals is a big part of commitment. Which got me thinking, I’ve never really had any goals prior to entering a relationship, certainly not marriage by x, baby by y. I’m just happy being with the person I love and supporting each other in being our best selves. I wonder if I’m unusual and if maybe that’s why people imply I may have commitment issues.

We don't have relationship goals but we are very close and talk about all areas of our life. I've been wondering for a while if we should talk more about the future. In saying that we've known each other well for decades and have our roles I suppose. The goal for me is to come to decisions together. His goal is that I continue to come up with ideas re change. I guess that's why it works so brilliantly, we are best mates, he's sexy as hell and we want the same things so I see that as working relationship goals.

Two words that make an oxymoron.

That is:

I agree a couple should be on the same page about what they want from life, e.g. marriage, kids, lifestyle, rough timelines and priorities for all of that. Not to mention values. That's pretty crucial.

I just hate the phrase "relationship goals" as it seems to go against what a relationship should be - getting to know each other and evolving together in the unique way brought on by your unique combination - instead suggesting a sausage-factory approach to relationships. Like "right, got a boyfriend, now we need to get engaged by X months just like my best friend did", never mind who he is or indeed who you are - that's what it makes me think of!

We don't.
We're on each others wave length, enjoy each others company and have high levels of trust, resurrect and mutual support.
Then life happens, you take opportunities as they arise, try to be the best version of yourself you can be and what you 'achieve' in the goals sense, flows out of that.
I think setting goals and working towards them as a couple is a bit cart before horse.
I say that as a couple who've been together 21 years, I've retained for new profession and we're building a house together which will be our dream home... So not lacking vision by not having a prescribed goals set.

I like my life, mostly, so I’d like my relationship to be the icing on my cake: a delightful addition
