Is it appropriate to display a rainbow flag for Pride if I’m not gay?!

Sorry if this is a stupid question! I’ve recently moved to Brighton, and this weekend is Pride. Some people have rainbow flags hanging out of their windows, and I’m wondering whether to hang one in support of Pride. Just wondering - are you only supposed to display rainbows if you’re gay?!

Yes. The gay police will come and arrest you otherwise.

I thought Pride was June?

Fifiesta · 04/08/2023 17:19

No it’s this weekend.
perhaps you are thinking of another city?

Needmorelego · 04/08/2023 17:21

Rainbows can be a symbol of being gay /supporting gay people.
Rainbows can be a symbol of supporting theNHS.
Rainbows can be a symbol for Christianity.
Or
Rainbows can just be rainbows. Cos they’re pretty.
🌈 🌈 🌈
I doubt in Brighton anyone one will be fussed.

To explain my question - there’s also a Disability Pride (though it’s a tiny event), and I’m disabled. As far as I know there’s no symbol for Disability Pride, but if there were, I’m wondering how I’d feel about people who are not disabled displaying it. Would I:
a) feel pleased they were showing support
or
b) feel they didn’t have the right to display it when they have no experience of being disabled?

Personally it would be a), but if I’m honest there might also be an element of b), and I could understand if some people felt more b).

I doubt anyone cares if you display a flag or not to be honest

Don’t be silly

I wasn’t imagining it.

It just seemed odd that Pride celebrations were scheduled for so long after Pride month, I thought the parades, parties etc were part of Pride month 🤷🏻‍♀️

Leeds pride tomorrow

Pastapoodles · 05/08/2023 09:46

I think it's perfectly fine to put a rainbow up in support personally and in all honesty no ones going to knock on your door and question you as to the reasons. Go for it 😊

Leeds pride is this weekend
Manchester pride is always the august bank holiday weekend.

I happened to stumble across a pride event in south wales last weekend.

They can happen at any time

LorraineInSpain · 05/08/2023 09:47

Rainbow flags are pretty much compulsory in Brighton on Pride weekend, aren’t they?

notsurewherenotsurewhy · 05/08/2023 13:44

Ah, see I'm a lesbian and I applaud your hesitation OP. I don't really like straight people getting too much into pride, it feels a bit like gatecrashing our party.

I am in the minority on this thread and I've always been in the minority in not wanting straight people in gay venues too, so I guess you can safely ignore me 😂

StarlightLady · 05/08/2023 16:19

Yes you can! Just as much as you can display a Ukraine flag and not be Ukrainian. 🍭

Jux · 05/08/2023 16:26

I'm just pissed off that a symbol of how amazing nature is has been subverted into a symbol of, well, I don't know what. If I lived in your place, I'd display an old-style Gay Pride flag happily, but the bloody rainbow flag really fucks me off.

The old style flag was also.a rainbow wasn't it?

StarlightLady · 05/08/2023 16:41

@Jux - The gay rainbow flag goes back to 1978, designed by Gilbert Baker, a gay man in San Francisco.

Ladyoftheknight · 05/08/2023 16:41

There is a disability pride flag, it's obviously more rare and expensive to buy though because we aren't always aknowledged. You can fly both or either flags though, gay/disabled or otherwise.

So you'd rather fly a rainbow flag, instead of a new rainbow flag? Cute!

CointreauVersial · 05/08/2023 16:45

Brighton Pride is indeed this weekend, and it's such an inclusive place I'm sure you can stick up a flag without anyone complaining.

FrostyGirl66 · 05/08/2023 16:46

Gay pride don't own the monopoly on rainbows. If you want to stick a rainbow in your window, just do it.
