Depression and attempt at relationship

I recently reconnected with an old uni friend. The relationship is very much online as we live a distance apart. We have met a couple of times and kissed. For the first couple of months it was very much her chasing me, unfortunately she then became depressed. We remained in contact and after another couple of months things heated back up again when her medication kicked in. More recently she became distant and it is clear that her depression is still not ‘sorted’. She has now called it off as she ‘doesn’t have he ability to cope with a relationship’. She is clear that she likes me but just feels numb to a relationship. She’s said that if she feels better in future she does still like me and would like to try again. I really like her and am happy to wait. We were in contact for about 7 months. I suppose I’m asking people who have had depression if this sounds as if she is being honest and should I keep my hopes up? Thank you

Depression can be a lifelong battle. You need to move on with your life and other women.

Who knows what the future holds but waiting is a terrible idea and I think you're misreading what she really means, which is not to take it personally but she doesn't want a relationship for the foreseeable future

Thank you. There is a very definite attraction from both of us but I think you may be correct.

I think it’s a shame that the condition would be such a barrier to a relationship. Imagine if it was a physical illness such as diabetes (I know it’s not the same), would you not want to support someone through this if you really like them?

I wouldn’t necessarily wait forever for this person, but at the same time, I wouldn’t necessarily write it off either.
