I was at a gathering the other day, my partner's family and a couple. We were sat around a picnic bench and some chunky wooden seats at bother ends. Because of chunkyness they felt set aside. I was sat at the table next to my partner of 8 years whom i only see at weekends and occasional evening walk.
Anyway 20 minutes in, I went to get a round in and came back only to find that my partner's father had taken my seat, so i gave out the drinks and went to sit at the far end. I appreciate he wanted to chat to his son and friend but he had already spent an hour with them. I thought he'd offer my seat back. Apparantly, seats are free for all in his family. I've been brought up differently.
