For what plausible reason would a man lock a woman and children in and then go out? It's happend before where she has had to crawl through a window to get out.

Well obviously the only reason is that he is abusive. Have you reported it to children's services?

I lock my OH in every time I go out
He is not a prisoner he has a key. If he lost both the back and front door keys he would have to climb through a window

So without knowing whether he has taken her keys or whether she is just ditsy and keeps losing them then we don't know if there is anything untoward going on or not.

She rarely goes out.
