I'd decided to stay single after breakup. Now I've been asked on a date and am not sure

I was dumped in a horrible way 2.5 years ago, was really hurt and heartbroken. I'm someone who was always happy alone before that relationship and had resolved to get back to that happy state again and I've had no interest in meeting anyone.

Recently, someone I've known for many years rang me out of the blue to ask me if I'd like to go for lunch or dinner with him. I was shocked/surprised as never thought of him in this way, but thinking about it since I definitely wouldn't say no. We left it that he told me to think about it.

I don't know what to do - say no and regret it later; but I'm really scared of things going wrong again.

Anyone ever resolve to stay single and then met someone and changed their mind?

It's just lunch - go. You don't suddenly switch from "single" to "in a relationship" after lunch!

I don't think anyone should resolve to say single or resolve to be in a relationship!!! Go with the flow!!!

Good advice! I'm trying to go more with the flow. I tend to overthink these things.

Time to let go of the past and be open to new opportunities, go with the intention of having a nice time, don't think about a relationship at this stage.

Yes, the fun has gone out of my life a bit so it might be nice

Enjoy the date! And take the chance to be as picky as you want with this man. If you are ever in another relationship, make sure it improves your life. If not, bin.

This. Go and enjoy lunch. You aren't agreeing to see him again, just eating a meal together.

In fact, decide in advance that this will just be a one off, and then you can relax and enjoy yourself. 🙂

I would definitely go!

Passmethpens · 29/04/2023 18:46

And I would love it if somebody would just ring me out of the blue and ask me out!

Newbeginings2 · 29/04/2023 19:27

Yes, I was feeling chuffed initially, then started to get nervous!

Nerves are natural, and a good sign.
Please go… and then feedback

Anyone ever resolve to stay single and then met someone and changed their mind?

About half of all people who have ever broken up with anyone will have done this, I think.

I was adamant I wasn't having anything to do with men ever again after my divorce. Actually didn't for several years. Now very happy 2 1/2 years into a relationship with a man who was a friend before. Wouldn't have missed it for the world. Good luck.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 29/04/2023 22:09

Go. 😉

So we've agreed to meet up, but not until June, due to non availability on either side before then. Hopefully I won't feel like chickening out, but I wouldn't let him down... I know it probably took a lot on his part to contact me. I'm curious as to whether this was a sudden impulse on his part or what!

It's the equivalent of waking up with a hangover and resolving to never drink again,

Must people say it in the immediate aftermath but it never lasts long term 😂

Casual dating is a fun part of being single IMO!
