Holidays for those who sleep separately

We are in separate rooms due to his snoring and acting out nightmares. I’ve no desire to share a room with him at all, but that makes it expensive for holidays, so what do others do ?

I'm the snorer in our relationship Blush we share a bed at home but if I'm snoring he gives me a nudge and I go to the spare room. We still share a room on holiday, as you say it would be really expensive otherwise. I think you'll have to warm him that you'll need to wake him up whenever he's snoring?

ZaZathecat · 16/04/2023 08:19

Our home arrangements are similar to Yellow's.
On holiday we get a twin or triple room to allow extra space between us, and DH brings earplugs too!

DustyLee123 · 16/04/2023 08:20

Waking him when snoring didn’t work for 20+ years, hence the separate rooms now !

Book 2 rooms or a suite with a bedroom and lounge, no way you will want to get less sleep on holiday than you do at home!

Ilovechoc12 · 16/04/2023 08:22

You could get a villa? Might be slightly cheaper.

Or you could try and share a room and sleep on a sun lounger by the pool if you don't get much sleep.

I personally always have my own room now even on hols but yes more £

Lostmyway86 · 16/04/2023 08:22

Same here. If it's something like a caravan holiday, we'll get an extra room or someone will go on the sofabed. If a hotel often we'll each go with one of the children. I literally can't sleep in the same room as him, I wear earplugs at home and can still hear his snoring from across the hall!

DustyLee123 · 16/04/2023 08:24

Yes, when we had kids on holiday with us we would go in separate rooms with a kid, but I don’t have that excuse any more.
And yes, I can still hear him from the opposite side of the house with his door shut.

Book a 2 bedroom
apartment, a suite with two separate sleeping areas or a family room with two separate areas.

GetYourActTogether1 · 16/04/2023 08:25

Or two completely separate rooms and possibly go for less days if the costs are too high.

HairyKitty · 16/04/2023 14:06

You don’t need an excuse of kids to book separate rooms. Just book them so you both can enjoy your hols.

TherebytheGraceofGodgoI · 16/04/2023 15:14

Has to be a lodge or caravan or similar with a few bedrooms. I look back at photos of holidays where we shared and I look shattered.

DrNo007 · 16/04/2023 15:16

We often hire a 2 bedroom house or apartment. Generally works out cheaper than hotel.

DrNo007 · 16/04/2023 15:16

If we have to stay in a hotel we book two rooms and suck up the cost.

gogohmm · 16/04/2023 15:19

Book an apartment with 2 rooms

SquigglePigs · 16/04/2023 15:25

We either book a cottage with enough rooms for us to sleep separately or I sleep in ear plugs. Really good industry at standard ones. They're comfy enough to wear for a few days but give me earache long term, hence the separate bedrooms at home.

dimpleton · 16/04/2023 15:28

Air bnb with two bedrooms or at least bedroom plus sofa bed. I also use silicon earplugs so I can't hear him through the wall.

Maria1982 · 16/04/2023 15:28

We are in the same boat. Sometimes we go for cottage/Airbnb rental so that we can have separate rooms. Other times we just suck up the cost of 2 rooms and go less frequently.
sorry no magic solutions, but much empathy!!

I’ve done the share a room and wear earplugs on holidays thing and for me it didn’t work - I was still awake and raging at 1am (and 2am, 3am, etc). Twin room made it slightly better than sharing a bed but not much.

Maryandherlamb · 16/04/2023 15:30

One bed apartment with a sofa bed helps to keep the costs down a little.

Echobelly · 16/04/2023 15:34

It's only just got to the stage where it's become necessary but at the moment when with the kids (2 secondary age) we get 3 bed places and make sure that one of the kids' rooms has 2 single beds so I can use it, or that there's a sofa bed in a common area.

Staying just us, again, look at small 2 bed airbnbs, or a 1 bedroom place that also has a sofa bed, as we're doing for our anniversary break this year. Sometimes, on a different bed on holidays, DH doesn't snore or we're both tired after a full day so I can sleep heavily enough not to be disturbed by him - so we can stay in one room but we need the option.

It's a shame as I like staying in hotels when it's just us, but it's just not a goer right now! We've also realised that if we want overnights when visiting friends out of town, we'll probably just have to go for two Travelodge/Premier Inn rooms as the most affordable option.

2023Hope · 16/04/2023 15:47

The silicone earplugs sound good where are they from please?

You can get them on Amazon or from boots. I break each one in half as they're too big otherwise, just roll them into a cone shape and jam them in (they're not small enough to get stuck but they properly mould to your ear shape)

MusicInAWord · 17/04/2023 00:19

Holidays are ok - we just accept the additional cost of the extra room, otherwise we'd both be miserable. It's staying with friends or family that causes us an issue as most people don't have 2 guest rooms and I find it an embarrassing conversation to have as they assume your marriage is crap.😞

Chersfrozenface · 17/04/2023 08:16

Don't go for a mobile home, not even an expensive lodge-style one - the walls are very thin. You'll hear every snore even in another bedroom. (I've been in a bedroom next to the kitchen area snd heard the kettle boiling.)
