Phone emergency alert 23 April

A siren will go off on nearly every smartphone in the UK on Sunday 23 April, the government has announced.

Saw on Facebook today a note about this for anyone in a domestic abuse situation who may have a second phone to make sure to turn it off for this alert!

(Trying to add a photo of that post but not sure if it has added)

You have to change it in the phones settings - not just switch the phone off.
Your phone company/manufacturer should have details of how to do that.
The alarm is now scheduled for 3pm on the 23rd.

Why are they doing this?

Needmorelego · 06/04/2023 22:41

@Flipflops123 it's just a test for a new alert system that can be used if people need to be alerted to something quickly - like if an area is going to be flooded and people need to evacuate or a factory fire and people need to stay indoors with doors/windows closed because of fumes.
I think it might also be used for missing children ("Amber Alert" they call it in America).
It's essentially like a News Flash you get on TV and radio but a more modern method that will reach more people.
This test is national and UK wide simply because they are making sure the system is working.
After this many people will probably never hear it again or very very rarely.

Thinking of all those men with burner phones….. bet they’ve deactivated it.

ItsOnlyWordsInnit · 06/04/2023 22:51

The country I‘m in did one of these tests a few months back, and fuck me they’re way louder than you expect. Luckily I was working alone from home, but a friend was in a Teams meeting with 20 colleagues and apparently it was mayhem. The ‘secret phone‘ aspect didn’t occur to me at all.

Needmorelego · 06/04/2023 22:55

I'm weirdly excited for the test. I'm gonna have all 3 of the phones (mine, husband, daughter) lined up in front of me and be staring at them.
But - for people that do have a hidden phone (for whatever reason) it is important they know how to change the settings.
